Sinopsis

Dem Days Was Hell - Recorded Testimonies of Former Slaves from 17 U.S. States is a poignant culmination of oral histories collected by the Work Projects Administration during the Great Depression. This remarkable work captures the harrowing accounts of former enslaved individuals, offering a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the horrors of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit. Utilizing a narrative style that blends documentary prose with lyrical recollection, the book contextualizes these testimonies within the socio-political landscape of early 20th-century America, seeking to document the lived experiences of those who endured the brutality of slavery as a means of preserving their voices for future generations. The Work Projects Administration, formed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, aimed to empower communities through employment and skill-building initiatives. Though initially focused on infrastructure, its initiatives also recognized the significance of cultural documentation. The WPA's focus on reconstructing American history through these testimonies reflects a broader commitment to social justice and historical accountability, profoundly influenced by contemporary movements for civil rights and racial equality. This essential anthology is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the complex legacies of slavery in America. By giving voice to the silenced, Dem Days Was Hell acts as a crucial historical document, inviting readers to engage with the past and ponder its repercussions on present and future generations. Readers will find themselves immersed in a rare tapestry of poignant memories, collective trauma, and enduring hope.

The origins of Wagadu, known as the Ghana Empire, are deeply rooted in oral traditions, mythology, and historical developments that shaped one of West Africa’s first great civilizations. The Soninke people, the founders of Wagadu, established the empire in a region rich in natural resources, particularly gold. Over centuries, the empire grew into a powerful trading state, controlling key trans-Saharan trade routes and influencing the political and economic landscape of West Africa.
According to the oral traditions of the Soninke people, the empire’s foundation is linked to the legend of Dinga Cisse, a mythical leader who is said to have guided his people to the lands of Wagadu. Stories passed down through griots, the custodians of history, describe how Dinga Cisse and his descendants established a ruling dynasty that oversaw the rise of Ghana. These traditions, while not verifiable by modern historical methods, offer insights into the cultural identity and historical memory of the Soninke people.
Geographically, the Ghana Empire emerged in what is now southeastern Mauritania and western Mali, an area characterized by vast savannas, river systems, and gold-bearing regions. The Senegal and Niger rivers played a crucial role in sustaining agriculture and facilitating trade. The region's climate, while challenging due to periods of drought, also provided fertile lands that supported farming, livestock, and settlement growth. The natural wealth of Wagadu, particularly its gold mines in Bambuk and Bure, laid the foundation for the empire’s economic dominance.

From the author of Searching for George Gordon Meade, a study of how troops from Maine aided the Union Army’s victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and his 20th Maine regiment made a legendary stand on Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. But Maine’s role in the battle includes much more than that. Soldiers from the Pine Tree State contributed mightily during the three days of fighting. Pious general Oliver Otis Howard secured the high ground of Cemetery Ridge for the Union on the first day. Adelbert Ames—the stern taskmaster who had transformed the 20th Maine into a fighting regiment—commanded a brigade and then a division at Gettysburg. The 17th Maine fought ably in the confused and bloody action in the Wheatfield; a sea captain turned artilleryman named Freeman McGilvery cobbled together a defensive line that proved decisive on July 2; and the 19th Maine helped stop Pickett’s Charge during the battle’s climax. Maine soldiers had fought and died for two bloody years even before they reached Gettysburg. They had fallen on battlefields in Virginia and Maryland. They had died in front of Richmond, in the Shenandoah Valley, on the bloody fields of Antietam, in the Slaughter Pen at Fredericksburg, and in the tangled Wilderness around Chancellorsville. And the survivors kept fighting, even as they followed Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. In Maine Roads to Gettysburg, author Tom Huntington tells their stories. The American Revolution is replete with seminal moments that every American learns in school, from the “shot heard ‘round the world” to the Declaration of Independence, but the events that led up to the fighting at Lexington & Concord were borne out of 10 years of division between the British and their American colonies over everything from colonial representation in governments to taxation, the nature of searches, and the quartering of British regulars in private houses. From 1764-1775, a chain of events that included lightning rods like the Townshend Acts led to bloodshed in the form of the Boston Massacre, while the Tea Party became a symbol of nonviolent protest.
The political and military nature of the Revolutionary War was just as full of intrigue. While disorganized militias fought the Battles of Lexington & Concord, George Washington would lead the Continental Army in the field while men like Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and Benjamin Franklin negotiated overseas in France. French forces would play a crucial role at the end of the war, and the Treaty of Paris would conclude the Revolution with one last great surprise.
The British surrender at Yorktown marked the end of major operations during the conflict, and many are familiar with the major role the French forces played there, and the extent of France’s participation in general, but few know the extent of other countries’ participation in the American Revolution. Among the other European powers, few had as big an influence in the Americas as Spain, and the Spanish Empire, though declining by the late 18th century, still possessed colonial holdings in the region. In fact, through political intrigue and past military efforts, the Spanish would have a say across much of the future United States during this period, from Florida to New Orleans, and all of it impacted American history over the coming decades after the Revolutionary War ended.
