Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's Dark Victory starring Spencer Tracy & Bette Davies.

Pericles is the Prince of Tyre but is forced to leave the city due to the atrocities that the wicked Emperor of Greece threatens to bestow should he stay. His courage, wisdom and goodness are recognized wherever he goes so much so that he marries the Queen of Pentapolis who bears him a child at sea, for he is forced to return to Tyre to pacify its citizens who are clamouring for his return as their ruler following the death of the wicked Emperor of Greece. He believes his Queen to have died in childbirth and has to trust the upbringing of this newly born daughter, Marina, with the good rulers of Tarsus, as on board ship is no place for an infant. Pericles was grief stricken at the loss of his wife and child and could hardly eat or speak but the twists of fate had a better outcome for him. Although not one of the best known of Shakespeare’s histories it has all his trademarks and with a strong reading by the warm rousing voice of Tim Graham, means this audio shouldn’t be ignored.

The Whistler was one of radio’s top mystery programs airing from May 16, 1942, until September 22, 1955. Sponsored by the Signal Oil Company, The Whistler (Bill Forman) was an ominous narrator who knew the killer’s every move even before they did. The stories followed an effective formula in which a person’s criminal acts were typically undone by their own missteps. The Whistler often commented directly upon the action in the manner of a Greek chorus, taunting the criminal from an omniscient perspective. One of the show’s trademarks was the ironic twist endings that helped serve as a payoff for the listener. Radio performers heard in this collection of 12 episodes include: Jane Morgan, Elliott Lewis, Lurene Tuttle, Gerald Mohr and Frank Lovejoy.

A new collection of poetry inspired by the work of Agnes Martin, exploring topics of feminism, art, depression, and grief, by the author of the prizewinning collection Obit.Yesterday I slung my depression on my back and went to the museum. I only asked four attendants where the Agnes painting was and the fifth one knew. I walked into the room and saw it right away. From afar, it was a large white square. With My Back to the World engages with the paintings and writings of Agnes Martin, the celebrated abstract artist, in ways that open up new modes of expression, expanding the scope of what art, poetry, and the human mind can do. Filled with surprise and insight, wit and profundity, the book explores the nature of the self, of existence, life and death, grief and depression, time and space. Strikingly original, fluidly strange, Victoria Chang's new collection is a book that speaks to how we see and are seen.

"I'd watch you eat. I'd eat you up. You're not like them, are you? You're real."
Lori is a professional chef. Bex waits tables to make ends meet. One night together in a walk-in fridge and the rest is history.
Lori has big plans, but Bex is struggling. If we are what we eat, then Bex is in real trouble. It's not her fault though – the system is rigged. No-one on minimum wage and zero hours has the headspace to make their own yoghurt.
Chris Bush's Hungry is a play about food, love, class and grief in a world where there's little left to savour.
It was premiered by Paines Plough on a UK tour in July 2021.

Bestseller - Poetry from Musician and Poet Keaton Henson

Combining whimsical illustrations with poems of love, humour and celebration of the ups and downs of being a touring recording artist, Idiot Verse is a delightful book in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and John Lennon. It’s a singer-songwriter’s notebook to himself, and the world, and sure to impress fans especially, of which Henson has many.
