William Makepeace Thackeray
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was an English novelist born in Calcutta. He lost his inheritance gambling and to a bank failure, worked as an illustrator and journalist in Paris and London, edited the Cornhill Magazine, and became Dickens's chief rival. His works include Vanity Fair, Pendennis, Henry Esmond, and the Roundabout Papers.
