Verba Lee Smith Birge was born in Polk County, Arkansas near the north slope of Whiskey Peak Mountain.
After earning a Masters Degree in Education from Henderson University at Arkadelphia, Arkansas she taught in public schools in Arkansas for thirty-five years. She taught both high school and elementary grades and for ten years she taught children with special needs.
