Thomas De Quincey
Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) was an English essayist born in Manchester. He ran away from school, lived destitute in London, became an opium addict at nineteen and wrote about it with a candour nobody had used before, and spent his life writing for the magazines. His works include Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts, and The Revolt of the Tartars.
