It was in wartime France in 1940 that Roger Schutz left his native Switzerland to settle in Burgundy, near a village called Taizé. He dreamed of beginning an international community based on ancient Christian principles of work, prayer and hospitality, beginning with the poor. Soon, he and a few friends were looking after Jewish refugees and caring for orphaned children.
