Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane (1871–1900) was the fourteenth child of a Methodist minister, wrote Maggie at twenty-one and printed it himself when no one would touch it, and imagined the Civil War so exactly in The Red Badge of Courage that veterans asked which battles he had fought in. He had seen none; afterwards he went to Cuba and Greece as a correspondent to find out. He died of tuberculosis at twenty-eight.
