R. M. Ballantyne
R. M. Ballantyne (1825–1894) spent six years as a Hudson's Bay Company clerk in the Canadian north and afterwards wrote nearly a hundred adventure stories for boys, going first to live among firemen, divers and lighthouse keepers so that the details would be right. A mistake about coconuts in his first book taught him that lesson permanently.
