Owen Chase
Owen Chase (1797-1869) was an American whaleman born on Nantucket, first mate of the Essex when a whale destroyed her in 1820. He survived the boat voyage, published his narrative the following year, returned to whaling as a captain, and died haunted by it. His work is the Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex.
