Herodotus
Herodotus (c. 484 – c. 425 BC) travelled Egypt, Scythia and the Persian empire asking questions, and wrote the first work in Europe that tried to explain a war rather than celebrate it. Cicero called him the father of history; his rivals called him the father of lies, mostly for stories that later evidence confirmed.
