Harriet Martineau
Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an English writer and social theorist born in Norwich. Deaf from her teens, she supported herself by writing, popularised political economy in a series that outsold Dickens, travelled in America as an abolitionist, and is often called the first woman sociologist. Her works include Illustrations of Political Economy, Deerbrook, and Society in America.
