Ethel M. Dell
Ethel M. Dell was an English novelist whose first book, The Way of an Eagle, was rejected eight times and then went through thirty editions. Critics loathed her — Rebecca West and Orwell both took swings — and the public did not care; she sold in the millions. Painfully shy, she avoided publicity entirely and gave much of her money away anonymously.
