Now the author spent two years in Germany, from 1959 to 1961, researching this book and during this period he was very lucky to have all his living expenses paid for. Paid for, that is, apart from one or two additional travelling expenses, which were non-negotiable but kept to the bare minimum by circumstances beyond his control.
