Bill Banning
Born in Penge South East London, May 1925, Bill Banning left Alexandra Elementary School in 1938 as war threatened. He worked for a scrap metal merchant salvaging steel and aluminium for building battleships and Spitfires and for an electrical engineering firm making electric motors before joining the Royal Navy
In late 1943 he was discharged with TB and spent two periods totaling 20 months in a TB Hospital and a Sanatorium.
