Benito Perez Galdos
Benito Pérez Galdós was a Spanish novelist widely held to be the greatest since Cervantes, author of some eighty novels including the forty-six-volume National Episodes retelling a century of Spanish history. A fierce anticlerical and republican deputy, he went blind in his last years and dictated his work. Catholic opposition is thought to have cost him the Nobel Prize.
