ARNOLD BENNETT
Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was an English novelist born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in the pottery towns he made his subject. A solicitor's clerk turned magazine editor, he wrote over thirty novels, ran wartime propaganda for France, and died of typhoid caught from a carafe of water in Paris. His works include The Old Wives' Tale, Clayhanger, Anna of the Five Towns, and Riceyman Steps.
