Ármin Vámbéry
Ármin Vámbéry (1832–1913) was born poor, lame and Jewish in Hungary, taught himself some twenty languages, and crossed Central Asia disguised as a dervish, where discovery meant death. He came back to a professorship in Budapest, advised the British on the East, and lived to be eighty-one.
