  为了回顾自己的百年人生，给世人一个最终的交代，季羡林先生亲自致信温家宝总理，要求调山东大学蔡德贵教授做自己的学术助手，协助自己进行口述历史的工作先后进行口述录音75次，这是年近百岁的国学大师季羡林先生首次系统的、全面的、客观的、真实的讲述他的人生经历。 
  首次详细讲述家庭生活中与婶母、夫人彭德华相处的细节，留德期间与伊姆加德的交往经过，以及任教北大后被北大校花的妹妹追求的种种经历，以及人们非常关注的与前后几位秘书的交往经过，皆为首次披露。凡此种种，皆为一位百岁老人在人生最后阶段最真实感情的流露。而书中所涉及到的历史人物也可谓前所未有。 
  作者介绍： 
  季羡林。山东清平人。1930年考入清华大学西洋文学系，1934年毕业，在山东省立济南高中任国文教师。1935年秋进人德国格廷根大学学习赞文、巴利文、吐火罗文等印度古代语言。1941年获哲学博士学位，并应聘留校任教。1946年回国，任北京大学东语系教授(直至现在)、系主任(至1983年)；1978年开始兼任北京大学副校长，至1984年离职。1956年4月加入中国共产党。1983年被选为第六届全国人民代表大会代表和常务委员会委员。现为中国外国文学研究会副会长，中国比较文学研究会名誉会长。他曾长期致力于梵文文学的研究和翻译，翻译了印度著名大史诗《罗摩衍那》。此外他还创作许多散文作品，已结集的有《天竺心影》、《朗润集》以及《季羡林散文集》等。2009年7月12日逝世。蔡德贵1945年7月生，山东招远人。季羡林生前最后一位学术助手、山东大学教授、巴哈伊研究中心主任、季羡林研究所副所长。曾任山东大学人文社会科学院副院长、《文史哲》主编。1970年3月本科毕业于北京大学阿拉伯语专业，1982年研究生毕业于山东大学中国哲学专业，获哲学硕士学位。先后在科威特、埃及、美国、瑞士、沙特阿拉伯、以色列、日本和香港、澳门访问研究、工作和参加学术活动。主要研究方向为中国哲学和东方哲学、宗教。主要著作有：《十大思想家》（合著）、《秦汉齐学》（合著）、《修身之道》、《阿拉伯哲学史》、《沙漠里的沉思——阿拉伯人的哲学与宗教》、《中国哲学流行曲》、《道统文化新编》（合著）、《季羡林传》、《当代伊斯兰阿拉伯哲学研究》（主编和主要作者）、《当代新兴巴哈伊教研究》、《季羡林师友录》，发表学术论文140余篇，主编有《东方著名哲学家评传》5卷、《阿拉伯近现代哲学》、《世界哲学家词典》、《东方思想宝库》、《中国儒学年鉴》等多部。
