Summary

Azrael is dead.
The most terrible necromancer the world ever knew has at last succumbed to the call of his own trade, and all of his foul works have fallen into ruin.
Or has death itself been cheated?
A thousand years later, the earth once scorched by death magic is again alive and green, and coveted by two empires of men. Azrael is all but forgotten.
But history forgotten is often relived.
A small troop of soldiers stumbles onto the rubble of an ancient keep and finds a relic of chilling beauty and tremendous power. But with power comes the seduction to use it, and when life and death hang in the balance, that seduction becomes overwhelming.
Yet there are fates worse than death…
For when Azrael’s deathmask is taken up by a human hand, the master of death will live again, and his ancient and terrible powers will be reawakened. Even faced with horrors unspeakable, there are those who will pay the price—any price—for power and victory.
But how can there be victory when life for Azrael means death for the world?

William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. His most popular works in the early part of the last century were his humorous tales set around the docks of Wapping and in the taproom of the infamous Cauliflower tavern. Many of his stories were written in a Cockney vernacular and were keenly observant of character. "The Rival Beauties" is one of the night watchman's most unlikely tales. He narrates the time when his ship came across a giant sea-serpent and they attempted to lure it with them to New York.

And then one foggy night, the "Paradise" collides with a passenger liner carrying three hundred souls.

"Rat Under Glass" is a short story that straddles the dark crime and extreme horror genres. It is primarily about Neo, a rat catcher who crosses the mob after his partner is killed by The Lobotomizer. Neo bungles the mob's bid for another sanitation contract by electrifying the runoff grids of New York. Lots of people fry, and the mob sees fit to dispense extreme punishment. Most of the story is about how Neo deals with that punishment, making use of his perseverance, tenacity, and off-the-wall thinking. The punishment involves a camcorder in a cave, recording Neo getting eaten alive by rats in a plexiglass cage. Oh, and he's stuck in there with the guy who killed his partner.
