Summary

A Megtanulok latinul nehezen meghatározható műfajú könyv: egy igen eredeti felfogásban megírt nyelvkönyvnek és egy nagy ívű kultúrtörténeti esszének az ötvözése. 
Révay József (1881–1970), a római kultúra és a latin nyelv kiváló ismerője egy igen praktikus alap­helyzetből indul ki: maga elé kép­zel egy középkorú férfit, aki hajdanán tanult ugyan latinul, de már mindent elfelejtett, ám úgy érzi, műveltsége nem lehet teljes némi latintudás nélkül. Az így el­képzelt olvasót a szerző „ba­rátomnak” szólítja, tegezi, s szellemes csevegésbe kezd vele a latin nyelvről és az ókori római kultúráról, mintha meghitt társa­ságban lenne. 
A szerző mindenekelőtt sikerél­ményt nyújt olvasójának: a köz­nyelvben általánosan használt nemzetközi szavak és latin eredetű jövevényszavak csokorba gyűjtésé­vel bebizonyítja, hogy valójában már több száz latin szót isme­rünk, anélkül hogy egyáltalán ne­kiláttunk volna a tanulásnak… 
Egy kis tanulás után pedig örömmel nyugtázhatjuk, hogy pontosan értünk egy csomó latin szállóigét, s teljes sorokat eddig elérhetetlennek hitt latin költők és írók műveiből.
