„Könyvem célja nem a tudományos rendszerezés, nem is a műfordítás történetének vagy elméletének feldolgozása; mindez ugyan hovatovább elodázhatatlan adóssága irodalomtörténetírásunknak, s jó néhány idevágó utalást én sem mellőzhetek, de kísérletem ebből a szempontból legjobb esetben is csak kedvet adó ösztönzés lehet másoknak. S nem is a szakmabeliekre, a műfordítókra gondoltam írás közben; nekik valószínűleg nem sok újat mondhat munkám, hisz elsősorban épp az ő műhelytapasztalataikra támaszkodik. Egyszerűen: az olvasókkal igyekszem megismertetni, megkedveltetni a műfordítást (ugyanúgy, ahogy – Goethe szavaival – a fordítók „ellenállhatatlan vonzalmat ébresztenek az eredeti mű iránt”); őket akarom elkalauzolni a fordítói műhely örömei, gondjai, érdekességei közé, hogy a remélhetőleg szemléletes példák és elemzések segítségével jobban élvezhessék és értékelhessék az anyanyelvünkön megszólaló idegen művekben a fordítói művészet izgalmas szépségeit, buktatóit és remekléseit. Ezzel nemcsak irodalmi élményük gazdagodik, kap új ízeket és színeket, de talán a magyar nyelv – és általában a nyelvek – varázsát is jobban megérzik, megértik majd.”
