  ربما كان الشعر أعصى الفنون على التعلم، وأبعدها من أن ينال بالدرس والتدريب، إنما هو شعاع يضعه الله في قلب من يشاء، وهبة يمنحها لمن يشاء، وحاسة معنوية يزيدها في خلق نفر من عباده يحسون بها ما لا يحسه كثير من الناس، فيترجمونه بيانًا ساحرًا، وقولًا مبينًا.
  ويرى الشاعر الكبير علي الجارم، أن الشعر طريق معبدة بين عالم الأجسام وعالم الأرواح، ينقل إلى المادة الفانية نفحات الروح الخالدة، ويرسل إلى ظلمات الحياة نورًا قدسيًّا، يبدد غيوم الغموم، ويكشف السبيل للأمل الحائر ، فليس الشعر الوزن وحده، ولا القافية وحدها، ولا الكلمات التي تملأ فراغ التفاعيل، وإن عذبت ولطفت، وإنما الشعر ما وراء كل بيت من ضوء روحانيٍّ وجد له بين ألفاظه منفذًا، ومن سحر سماويٍّ زحزح البيت دونه طرف الستار.
  وشأن الشعر شأن الفنون كلها، إما أن يكون فنًّا، وإما ألا يكون، وإما أن يكون شعرًا، وإما ألا يكون، فليس فيه كبقية منتجات العقول جيد ومتوسط ورديء. فهو إما أن يكون جيدًا، وإما ألا يكون شعرًا، نعم إن الجودة متفاوتة، ولكنها إذا نزلت إلى حد التوسط فقد الشعر مميزاته، وسلب مقوماته، وأصبح كلامًا، كما يجرد القائد المذنب من رتبه وألقابه فيصبح جنديًّا.

  نعم كان هذا طموحي وأنا أبدأ في هذه المخاطرة؛ أن أقدم صياغة شعرية مختصرة لأحداث السيرة الكبيرة، بحيث يكون الكتاب بمثابة متنٍ شعريّ فصيح طويل يمكن لكلّ عربيّ أن يفهمه أو يقتبسه ومن ثم تحتفظ السيرة بتوثيق شعبيّ جديد لا يغني أبدًا عن أصلها العاميّ ولا عن الاستماع إلى التفاصيل الممتعة التي يضطرنا التكثيف إلى تجاوزها نحو قلب الحكاية.
