لم يتحدث في الكتاب عن أي دين سماوي، بل بدأ كتابه ببوذا وكونفوشيوس ثم عرج في عشرة فصول على سير وأفكار عشرة مفكرين وأدباء منهم شكسبير وجوته وتولستوي، فكأنه رفعهم إلى مصاف الأنبياء وتعامل مع إبداعهم وأفكارهم وكأنها تعاليم دين من الأديان. أما بقية الفصول فتحدث فيها عن أحلام وطوباويات مثل الأرض المجهولة أو عن نقيضها كما في جزيرة الأبالسة. وفي صدر الكتاب يصف هؤلاء بأنهم "الرجال العظام الذين قادوا المجتمع البشري، وظهروا فيه كالأعلام على مدار الحقب، وتركوا في أديم الحياة الإنسانية آثارًا عميقة لا تمحوها رمال الزمن".Ver libro
