Sinopsis

Traffic Robots explores the potential of robotic traffic management systems to revolutionize urban transportation. The book examines how autonomous, interconnected robots can optimize traffic flow, addressing the limitations of traditional methods in congested cities. It presents a vision where robots process data in real-time, coordinate movements precisely, and adapt dynamically to changing conditions. Readers will find intriguing insights into how these systems can reduce commute times and optimize fuel consumption, offering a technologically feasible path to a more sustainable urban ecosystem.

The book begins with a historical overview of traffic management and progresses through key concepts like sensor technology, communication protocols, and decision-making algorithms. It analyzes various traffic scenarios, demonstrating how robotic systems can manage dynamic lanes and predict traffic routing. By incorporating data from traffic simulations and real-world experiments, the book provides empirical evidence of the effectiveness of robotic traffic management.

This book stands out by focusing on autonomous robotic systems as active agents in shaping traffic flow, rather than simply automating existing infrastructure. It adopts an analytical approach, using clear language and examples to explain complex technical concepts, making it a valuable resource for urban planners, transportation engineers, and policymakers interested in the future of urban mobility.

Every day, thousands of hidden and ignored problems frustrate workers and customers and, in turn, reduce profits.  The key to finding and fixing these problems is to engage employees closest to the work and closest to the customer in new ways so they can contribute their ideas. This book provides rules that, if followed, will allow employees to harvest all the low hanging fruit and some that is not so low hanging that will grow earnings, make customers happier, and increase morale. Some examples of these rules include Rule 15: Routinely review and stop zombie projects.  No one admits it, but projects approved with fanfare are often completed even when midway through it is clear that they wont work because no one wants to say they made a mistake.  Killing zombie projects saves money and allows precious resources to be reallocated to worthwhile projects. Rule 17: Get out of the habit of always doing the best job you can!  Its counter-intuitive, but conscientious employees often waste time and money trying to do a great job when a good job is all that is needed.  This rule finds ideas that eliminate well-intentioned gold plating. Rule 30: Always ask, how do you know that is true?  Nothing kills good ideas faster than someone uttering, customers wont like it or operations cant do it or it wont pay back.  These tend to be opinions not facts.   By simply learning to ask how do we know thats true? and demanding facts, many perfectly good ideas will live to see the light of day!

The untold succession struggle at Walt Disney Productions following the death of its founder, and the generational transformation which led to the birth of the modern multibillion-dollar animation industry.

Walt Disney left behind big dreams when he died in 1966. Perhaps none was greater than the hope that his son-in-law, Ron Miller, would someday run his studio. Under Miller's leadership, Disney expanded into new frontiers: global theme parks, computer animation, cable television, home video, and video games. Despite these innovations, Ron struggled to expand the Disney brand beyond its midcentury image of wholesome family entertainment, even as times and tastes evolved. Tensions between Miller and Walt's nephew, Roy E. Disney, threatened to destroy the company, leading Wall Street "Gordon Gecko" types to come after Mickey Mouse.

At the same time, the aging Animation Department—once the core of Walt's business—was one memo away from shutting down forever. Rather, thanks to the radical efforts of Walt's veterans to recruit and nurture young talent, it was revived by this sudden influx of artists who would go on to revolutionize the film industry. Additionally, this new generation would prove over time that animation was so much more than just kids' stuff—it was a multibillion dollar industry.

This is the upstairs-downstairs story of the executives and animators who clashed and collaborated to keep America's most storied company alive during the most uncertain period in its one hundred year history.
