In this crime mystery, when Police Officer Danny Garcia and his partner get a call for a disturbance of the peace, they have no idea of the surprise in store for them. Danny has been angling for a police detective job, and something about this arrest stinks - and not just the alcohol on the alleged criminals’ breath. While off duty, Danny is hit with another stumper. A fellow parishioner approaches him at church, hoping for some help with a sensitive problem. As Danny takes action to unravel the mystery, he becomes convinced that a priest at his church is not what he claims to be. Danny is torn between what his gut is telling him and the letter of the law. The detective in him can't let go –even when it threatens his job, and in spite of his girlfriend's insistence that he stay out of it. His Chief is warning him off as well. Danny is left with two unlikely allies – his young, smart ass cop partner; and his estranged, alcoholic brother. Things really go south for Danny after he and his partner are involved in a fatal shooting, but in this mystery thriller, this may just provide the opportunity Danny needs to go after the suspects everyone is telling him to leave alone.

Paloma has been watching the Grand Vespertilio Show her entire life. After Paloma’s husband, a homicide detective, discovers an obscure movie poster pinned on a mutilated corpse on stage at the Chicago Theater, she knows that the only person that can help solve this mystery is Grand. When another body appears at an abandoned historic movie palace the deaths prove to be connected to a silent film, lost to the ages, but somehow at the center of countless tragedies in Chicago.

Just when she's really got her hands full with that, she's assigned a new property to take care of as part of her contract with the USDA. When a bloodsoaked garment turns up among some things Sam has dropped off at the thrift shop, Sam recommends that they call the Sheriff's office. Deputy Beau Cardwell is a bit under pressure himself, as the Sheriff is so busy running for reelection that the office is understaffed. Together, Sam and Beau sift through the evidence and discover that the bloody coat leads to a far more complicated situation than a simple case of murder. Once again Sam calls upon the powers of the magical wooden box that came into her possession a few months earlier to help unwind the tangled threads of the case.
