Sinopsis

Tree Age Science unveils the extraordinary role of trees as living historians, decoding Earth’s environmental past and present through their rings, cells, and interactions. At its core, the book explores dendrochronology—the study of tree rings—to reveal how these natural archives document centuries of climate shifts, volcanic eruptions, and human impacts. Readers discover how a single ring can pinpoint droughts, wildfires, or even societal collapses, like the Maya civilization’s decline linked to deforestation. Beyond climate clues, the book highlights trees as ecosystem engineers, fostering biodiversity through symbiotic relationships with fungi and wildlife while silently combating climate change via carbon sequestration.

Blending ecology and climatology, the authors present cutting-edge research—from isotopic analysis tracing atmospheric changes to AI models predicting forest resilience. Case studies span ancient bristlecone pines surviving millennia to modern “ghost forests” killed by rising seas, grounding complex science in vivid examples. The narrative uniquely bridges technical rigor and storytelling, weaving indigenous knowledge with lab discoveries to show how trees inform conservation strategies. Structured in three acts—tree biology, environmental detective work, and future solutions—the book progresses from foundational concepts to urgent applications, like using historical data to guide reforestation.

What sets Tree Age Science apart is its ability to transform trees from passive scenery into active climate allies. By framing forests as dynamic chroniclers, it empowers readers to rethink conservation, policy, and humanity’s bond with nature—proving that every ring holds a lesson for our planet’s survival.

The history and use of New Zealand's native plants

A guide and gift book in equal measure, this treasure of a book pays homage to New Zealand's native plant species.
The Meaning of Trees tells the story of plants and people in Aotearoa New Zealand. Beautifully illustrated with botanical drawings, paintings and photographs, it shows us how a globally unique flora has been used for food, medicine, shelter, spirituality and science. From Jurassic giants to botanical oddballs - these are our wonderful native and endemic plants, in an exquisite hardback edition.
Praise for The Meaning of Trees:
'Robert Vennell makes wandering through our bush seem like a visit to a giant shopping centre. Over there is the kawakawa store, offering everything from an aphrodisiac to a gonorrhoea cure. Next door is the tutu cafe, where you can enjoy delicious wine or a refreshing laxative (though the seeds are deadly). On the top floor is the matai bar, where the berries aren't to everyone's taste, but the bushman's beer is great. And round the corner is the miro health centre. Every plant has a story and the result is delightfully informative.'

The Collected Writings of Edward Leedskalnin is a compilation of two of Leedskalnin's works, Magnetic Current and A Book in Every Home. This eccentric sculptor and amateur scientist devoted most of his life to creating a large complex of megalithic stones that he quarried and carved himself. Edward Leedskalnin was born in Latvia in 1887. Although he only received formal education up to the fourth grade, he was very inquisitive and spent a large part of his youth reading. He was said to be a sickly boy and grew into a small man-reportedly measuring just 5 feet tall and weighing 100 lbs. At age 26, he was engaged to marry a 16-year-old girl named Agnes Skuvst, but the wedding was called off. Accounts differ, some claiming the wedding was canceled the day before it was scheduled and others saying that Leedskalnin was jilted at the altar. Regardless, he was heartbroken and shortly after emigrated to America. After reaching New York in 1912, he continued on to Oregon where he worked for an ax-handle manufacturer. By 1923, he had contracted tuberculosis. The illness prompted him to move to a warmer climate for his health. He chose Florida, where he purchased an undeveloped acre of land in Florida City. It was on this modest plot that he began Rock Gate (later renamed Coral Castle). This ambitious project involved extracting enormous pieces of oolite stone from his land, moving them into position, and carving them-entirely alone. The pieces include sculptures and carved stone furniture, as well as a two-story tower that served as his living quarters. The project was devoted to his "Sweet Sixteen," the woman who had rejected him many years earlier.Due to the scale of the project, some have dubbed it "Florida's Stonehenge." While it's unclear how Leedskalnin was able to complete it, it is all the more impressive considering his small stature and questionable health. When he wasn't hewing or carving stone, Leedskalnin was also conducting experiments and writing.

Forest is a celebration of the diverse ways in which trees and forests are as magnificent, economically relevant and profoundly enchanting today as they ever have been.
Journeying across the continents, writer Matt Collins and photographer Roo Lewis tie together both the historical context and modern-day applications of some of the world's most fascinating and iconic trees. They explore the heritage of woodlands from around the world and meet those whose lives are inexplicably bound to them.
The book is divided into 10 main chapters, each of which explores a tree from a particular genus – Pine, Juniper, Oak, Hornbeam, Cherry, Beech, Birch, Chestnut, Douglas-fir and Poplar. Each chapter provides the reader with a short introduction to the tree, followed by a journalistic account of its relevance to modern day-life (from gin making on Isle of Islay to a truffle farm in Spain), and concludes with an account of the tree in its native forest (from hornbeams in the Ironwoods of Ontario to firs on Vancouver Island).
Captured on medium-format film, Roo’s stunning, rich colour images are the perfect companion to Matt’s engaging storytelling and botanical knowledge. Forest crafts a captivating interpretation of the story of the forest through the trees.
Matt Collins Forest is a non-fiction exploration of conservation, botany, and the protection of our ecosystems. Pre-order this up-coming book to learn about the latest themes and subjects in earth sciences and geography.

This book contains the following titles:
Biochemistry - Biochemistry is the branch of science that explores the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. As a multidisciplinary field, it blends principles from chemistry, biology, and physics to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern life. At its core, biochemistry seeks to explain how cells and organisms function at a molecular level, providing insights into the structure, function, and interactions of biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. This knowledge is crucial not only for understanding the basic processes of life but also for advancing medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.
Chemistry -  Understanding the principles of chemistry has numerous practical applications in everyday life. It influences the development of pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and new materials like plastics and metals. Chemistry also plays a critical role in the food industry, as it helps improve food preservation, flavor, and safety. Additionally, chemists are essential in developing clean and sustainable energy sources, creating technologies that enhance our quality of life.
