Sinossi

"Desert Survival Notes" offers a compelling exploration of how life persists in Earth's most water-scarce environments, where survival demands remarkable adaptations and innovative strategies. Through a comprehensive analysis of desert ecosystems, the book reveals fascinating insights into how organisms cope with extreme conditions where annual rainfall drops below 25 centimeters.

The text masterfully weaves together research from major desert systems worldwide, including the Sahara and Atacama, to present a global perspective on desert ecology and survival mechanisms. The book's unique strength lies in its systematic examination of three critical themes: physiological adaptations, resource optimization, and species relationships in water-limited environments.

Readers discover extraordinary examples of survival strategies, such as plants developing specialized root systems that reach depths exceeding 20 meters and animals evolving sophisticated metabolic adjustments to minimize water loss. The integration of climate science, geology, and conservation biology provides a multidisciplinary understanding of desert ecosystems that's particularly relevant as global climate patterns shift toward increased aridity.

Progressing from the fundamental physical parameters of desert environments through biological adaptations and ecological interactions, the book maintains a balance between scientific rigor and accessibility. Each section incorporates detailed diagrams, data tables, and field photographs, making complex concepts comprehensible while retaining their scientific integrity. This approach makes it an invaluable resource for researchers, environmental scientists, and advanced students seeking to understand the intricate mechanisms that enable life to thrive in Earth's most challenging environments.

The first full-length history of biomedical research with human subjects in the period "before Tuskegee"—from 1890 to 1940

Long before the U.S. government began conducting secret radiation and germ-warfare experiments, and long before the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, medical professionals had introduced—and hotly debated the ethics of—the use of human subjects in medical experiments. In Subjected to Science, Susan Lederer provides the first full-length history of biomedical research with human subjects in the earlier period, from 1890 to 1940.

Lederer offers detailed accounts of experiments—benign and otherwise—conducted on both healthy and unhealthy men, women, and children, including the yellow fever experiments (which ultimately became the subject of a Broadway play and Hollywood film), Udo Wile's "dental drill" experiments on insane patients, and Hideyo Noguchi's syphilis experiments, which involved injecting a number of healthy children and adults with the syphilis germ, luetin.

It has been said that science may be divided into two categories, astronomy which covers all things outside the Earth, and geophysics which deals with everything else. The geophysicist is dedicated to the study of the earth by physical means, and the Earth as a whole is his sphere. This is perhaps the biggest difference between the geophysicist and the geologist, for present geological techniques are based only on the study of the features of the Earth which are disclosed at the very surface of it. Although this sometimes gives a clue as to conditions at some depth below the surface, it is only by physical methods such as measurement of the Earth’s gravity or magnetic fields, by the study of its thermal regime or of seismic waves that have traversed it that reliable information can be obtained about the interior of the Earth. It is at the surface that the geologists and geophysicists meet, and theories must be made to coincide. Nowhere is this common meeting ground more important than in Antarctica, for over most of the continent the ice sheet deprives the geologist of his access to the true surface of the solid earth.

Spaced Out is designed to give a brief overview on all of the subjects that pertain to astronomy and space sciences in a down-to-Earth way.
It is inspired by current space news and the most asked questions from popular science communicator Kalpana Pot’s online audience.
The subjects covered include our solar system, stars, galaxies, exoplanets, telescopes, spacetime, interstellar objects, relativity, quantum mechanics, debunking conspiracies, and the unknown.
Each page covers one specific concept that fits into the above categories. This gives the readers a general take on rather complex topics.
Readers are further encouraged to do their own deep-dive on the topics that interest them the most.
The more we learn about the Universe, the more we realize how much we don’t know. Discoveries that challenge what we once thought we knew happen all the time. This book is accurate for the time of the writing, but things can always change, and that’s what’s most exciting about science in general!
Space is for everyone. You’re never too old, too young, too uneducated, or even too busy to slow down and ponder the final frontier.

    Mayan Astronomy: The History of...

Many ancient civilizations have influenced and inspired people in the 21st century, and the Greeks and Romans continue to fascinate the West today, but of all the world’s civilizations, none have intrigued people more than the Mayans, whose culture, astronomy, language, and mysterious disappearance all continue to captivate people. In the past decade especially, there has been a renewed focus on the Mayans, whose advanced calendar led many to speculate the world would end on the same date the Mayan calendar ended in 2012.
For the Maya, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their everyday lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview. The Maya recorded time on almost every surface they could, including lintels, cornices, panels, stelae, friezes, ceramics, and paper. This insistence on capturing dates has led many scholars to suggest the Maya were obsessed with time.
The Maya had some of the most advanced astronomical measurements in the world, and their work built upon thousands of years, spanning from around 2500 BCE until the the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. Thanks to their hieroglyphic writing, archaeologists have been able to learn a wealth of information about the way they lived and their complex system of beliefs.
