Sinopse

"Dangers of the Deep" plunges into the extreme world of deep-sea life, exploring how creatures thrive in crushing pressures and perpetual darkness. The book unveils unique adaptations such as bioluminescence, used by anglerfish to lure prey, and specialized physiological processes that allow survival where most life cannot exist. Discoveries about these extreme environments shed light on the limits of life itself and potential for life on other planets, making this book valuable for anyone curious about the natural world and the mysteries of the ocean.

The book begins by setting the stage with the physical characteristics of the ocean depths, then moves to an in-depth look at key animal groups and their specific adaptations. It progresses from basic concepts of deep-sea ecology to the impacts of human activities like deep-sea mining on these fragile ecosystems.

The book's approach blends cutting-edge research with accessible explanations, offering a unique perspective on the biodiversity and ecological interactions of the deep sea.

One woman's journey through South America - and the devastating story of our planet's disappearing biodiversity

Pedalling hard for thirteen months, eco adventurer Kate Rawles cycled the length of the Andes on an eccentric bicycle she built herself. The Life Cycle charts her mission to find out why biodiversity is so important, what's happening to it, and what can be done to protect it.

From the Pacific Ocean to rainforests and salt flats, Kate learns that armadillos can cross rivers by holding their breath, that Colombia has more species of birds than North America and Europe combined, and that in threatening species and ecosystems, we're tearing down our own life support system. En route, she witnesses the devastation of goldmining and oil drilling but finds hope in the incredible people working to regenerate habitats and communities. As she reaches the 'end of the world', she realises that to tackle biodiversity loss we all have a role to play.

Great Sierra Waters, the Eastern Slope is a definitive study of the Truckee River but also includes the Owens and the East Walker. It's a serious fly-fishing book that shows you how to fish these rivers, what to use as far as fly patterns, and how to tie them for your greatest success. In addition to the fishing information which represents 60 years of fishing knowledge by the author, it details the plight of the Lahontan Cutthroat that has existed in the Truckee River drainage for 10 million years. This drainage runs from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake and the Cutthroats have been famous since the 1930's when fishermen flocked from all over the world to fish for them.
In the last twenty years the original strain was found in a few tributaries in the Pilot Peak range of north central Nevada. They have taken hold again in Pyramid Lake and fish in excess of 30 pounds are currently available and they're running up the Truckee to spawn. The demise of the Truckee began with the building of Derby Dam in the early 1900s. The last great spawning run occurred in 1938, and the average fish weighed 18 1/2 pounds. The last great Cutthroat trout was caught in 1949 in downtown Reno, Nevada and weighed twenty-two pounds and ten ounces.
As a boy, author Terry Courtright fished it constantly from the time he was 10 years old until he left for college. He later came back and wrote outdoor columns about fly fishing the Truckee, then moved back to Montana to fish all of the great waters in the West. As we speak, there is a great resurgence of interest in recovering this fish in this fishery and Courtright's last chapter on this book called The Restoration of the Lahontan Cutthroat brings to light the most sophisticated and workable fisheries plan that has ever been developed. Great Sierra Waters is a welcome and timely addition to knowledge of the trout fisheries everywhere.

'I often sit by the bank of the small river that flows through our farm in County Wicklow, fascinated by its many moods ... Getting to know a river is like reading the story of a person's life ... from its young energetic stages in the hills to the slower-moving mature river, through to the tranquil water of lakes and finally to its resting place in the sea.'
Richard Nairn is an ecologist who has been visiting waterways around Ireland for over half a century, fascinated by how they sustain and enrich our lives. Here he sets out on a year-long adventure to explore every stretch and tributary of the Avonmore River, which runs through Co. Wicklow. From source to sea, he immerses himself in the wildlife, archaeology, history and people connected to the river. Travelling to explore more of Ireland's rivers, lakes, wet woodlands, ponds and canals, Richard details encounters with dragonflies, crayfish, otters and great flocks of migratory waterbirds, and finds himself awestruck by the sense of a lost wilderness they convey.
With our waterways now under serious threat, this is a love letter to Ireland's rivers and lakes, and a reminder of what we stand to lose.
'Opens the window into a watery world. Personal yet panoramic.' Colin Stafford-Johnson, filmmaker.
