Sinopsis

"Buried Nuclear Waste" presents a comprehensive exploration of one of the most critical challenges facing modern energy production: the safe, long-term management of radioactive materials. The book expertly weaves together three fundamental aspects of nuclear waste management: containment technologies, regulatory frameworks, and environmental impact assessment, providing readers with a thorough understanding of how these elements interact in creating effective waste management solutions.Drawing from six decades of industry experience, the book guides readers through both the technical and policy aspects of nuclear waste management, making complex concepts accessible through clear explanations and practical examples. From vitrification processes to multi-barrier containment systems, it examines current storage technologies while analyzing successful and problematic management approaches through detailed case studies. The text particularly excels in demonstrating how physics, environmental science, and public policy intersect in waste management decisions. The book's systematic progression from immediate containment challenges to long-term storage solutions sets it apart from more politically focused treatments of the subject.By incorporating evidence from Department of Energy reports, international atomic energy agency studies, and geological surveys, it provides a balanced, scientific perspective on crucial debates such as deep geological storage versus above-ground monitoring. This approach makes it an invaluable resource for environmental scientists, energy policymakers, and informed citizens seeking to understand the complexities of nuclear waste management.

While speaking at a memorial event in 2006, Siri Hustvedt suffered a violent seizure from the neck down. Despite her flapping arms and shaking legs, she continued to speak clearly and was able to finish her speech. It was as if she had suddenly become two people: a calm orator and a shuddering wreck. Then the seizures happened again and again. The Shaking Woman tracks Hustvedt's search for a diagnosis, one that takes her inside the thought processes of several scientific disciplines, each one of which offers a distinct perspective on her paroxysms but no ready solution. In the process, she finds herself entangled in fundamental questions: What is the relationship between brain and mind? How do we remember? What is the self?

During her investigations, Hustvedt joins a discussion group in which neurologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, and brain scientists trade ideas to develop a new field: neuropsychoanalysis. She volunteers as a writing teacher for psychiatric in-patients at the Payne Whitney clinic in New York City and unearths precedents in medical history that illuminate the origins of and shifts in our theories about the mind-body problem. Hustvedt synthesizes her experience and research into a compelling mystery: Who is the shaking woman? In the end, the story she tells becomes, in the words of George Makari, "a brilliant illumination for us all."

The globalised belief in one ‘God’ has become a problem. The prayer ‘Our Father in heaven’ presents an image that embodies the values of uniformity, exclusivity, patriarchy, authoritarianism and the absence of a sacred presence in nature.

Here on earth, the climate and biodiversity emergencies foreshadow an apocalyptic future for humans and all life forms. To confront and resolve these emergencies, we need to apply values contrary to the ‘Father God’ image. The important values today include: diversity, inclusivity, gender justice, democracy and a recognition of the sacredness of nature.

Can we find new spiritual images and narratives that embody these values? This book suggests we can.

Reimagining the Divine is a call for diversity in belief. No religion has a monopoly of truth. Everyone’s experience and perspective has merit.

The Spirituality of Experience is a form of mysticism that incorporates these new values. Practiced historically by Celtic monks, it focuses on one’s personal experience of the sacred, and not on beliefs or a creed.
If your vision for the future is
    ·     The return of humans to harmony with the rest of nature
    ·     The building of a world community that is tolerant and inclusive
    ·     Finding a way of living on this planet that corrects the human causes of climate change and biodiversity loss
then this book may help you, and all of us, get there.

    Sciatica - Managing and...

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and legs. This pain typically affects only one side of the body and can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain. The underlying cause of sciatica is usually compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. While sciatica itself is not a disease, it is a symptom of an underlying issue affecting the lower spine.
One of the most common causes of sciatic nerve irritation is a herniated or slipped disc in the lumbar spine. When the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer layer, it can press against the sciatic nerve, leading to inflammation and pain. In addition, conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, and spinal stenosis can also contribute to sciatic pain by narrowing the spaces within the spine and putting pressure on the nerve roots. Other factors, including muscle tightness, injury, or prolonged sitting, can further aggravate the condition.
Symptoms of sciatica can vary widely depending on the severity of the nerve compression. Some individuals experience a sharp, shooting pain that travels from the lower back down the leg, while others may feel a persistent ache, numbness, or tingling in the affected area. In more severe cases, muscle weakness or difficulty moving the leg or foot may occur. The pain can worsen with prolonged sitting, standing, or sudden movements such as coughing or sneezing. Understanding the specific symptoms and their triggers is essential in determining the most effective treatment approach.

A patient’s and provider’s guide to the telehealth revolution

What if we could see a doctor faster, more efficiently, and at a lower cost? With the emergence of telemedicine, we now can. And this book is a primer on telemedicine for anyone who wants to take charge of their health and understand all their healthcare options.

A mix of patient stories, research, and viewpoints from practicing physicians, Skip the Waiting Room explores telemedicine from all angles. Among other topics, it explains:

    • How telehealth will positively change how providers deliver care
    • How remote care can expand access to rural and marginalized groups
    • What types of care are best suited for telehealth and what types are not
    • Why telehealth is not just for the sick

This valuable guide illustrates why telemedicine is not only a viable solution to many of our healthcare problems but also an inevitable and crucial one.

Mathematical physics serves as the foundation for expressing and solving physical problems using rigorous mathematical structures and techniques. The discipline of mathematical physics bridges the gap between abstract mathematical theories and physical phenomena, providing a formal framework through which the laws of nature are defined, analyzed, and interpreted. The foundations of mathematical physics rest on several key mathematical structures, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and complex analysis. These mathematical tools are essential for formulating physical theories, predicting experimental outcomes, and uncovering deeper insights into the nature of the physical world.
One of the fundamental mathematical tools in physics is calculus, which provides the framework for describing the motion of objects, the behavior of fields, and the change of physical quantities over time and space. Newton and Leibniz independently developed the principles of differential and integral calculus, which allowed for the precise formulation of classical mechanics and gravitation. Differential calculus deals with rates of change and slopes of curves, which are essential in defining velocity, acceleration, and force. Integral calculus, on the other hand, is used to calculate areas under curves and accumulated quantities, such as work and potential energy.
