Summary

Reading People Instantly offers a guide to understanding human behavior by decoding nonverbal communication, microexpressions, and linguistic analysis. It reveals how to interpret subtle cues like body language and facial expressions to better assess intentions and emotions. The book highlights that even fleeting microexpressions can reveal concealed emotions, drawing on research to identify universally recognizable emotional expressions. Furthermore, it explores how linguistic analysis of speech patterns and word choice can uncover hidden meanings and potential deception, improving your ability to detect deception.

The book progresses systematically, starting with fundamental principles of emotional expression before dissecting microexpressions, nonverbal cues, and linguistic patterns. Subsequent chapters focus on practical applications in various settings, like understanding workplace dynamics and enhancing personal relationships. Each chapter includes exercises and case studies, designed to reinforce learning.

The book uniquely integrates these three key elements into an actionable framework, which sets it apart from other self-help communication guides.

Anna would have become the virtuous lady her parents had intended, but their sudden deaths leaves her orphaned and destitute and she is taken in by her godfather, a strict disciplinarian.
While defiant and afraid when first disciplined, Anna soon becomes an aficionado to the art of birching and realizes she is more excited by giving than receiving. She also develops a taste for the sensual pleasures of another woman with Sally, her godfather's maid, who soon becomes submissive to Anna's lascivious desires.
Unwilling to enter domestic service as a governess, Anna is apprenticed to Madame Stewart who quickly sells her virginity to a well-placed lord. His lordship is so delighted with Anna that he sets her up as his mistress in a fashionable London suite. But tiring of the confinement of the life of a concubine and his lordship's jealousy, she escapes to the continent. Following exposure to erotica by a ship's captain and a series of sexual adventures in Naples and Paris, Anna becomes a wealthy woman of pleasure and returns to London to establish her own brothel.
This erotic Victorian adventure includes birching, lesbian sex, virgin deflowering, role play and prostitution.

By the dawn of the 17th century, Portuguese influence in Africa fell into decline, and the occasions of European contact with Ethiopia became very few and far between. It would be another three centuries before another European would venture into the holy precincts of Lalibela as part of a British military expedition mounted in 1867. Thus, the “rediscovery” of the remarkable churches and the story of Christianity in Ethiopia would only be recently written.
It is also true that the Catholic spiritual hierarchy reflected the structure of African spiritual life. The first line of African worship is composed of the spirits of passed ancestors whose relationship with the living remains direct and active. This overlapped with the idea of a host of saints endowed with specific functions and responsibilities. At a higher level, the more remote ancestral spirits, those of more than three or four generations past who have merged into the overall spirit of the nation, formed a less definable but powerful presence in day to day life. These spirits easily translate to angels, while the almighty creator, too vast and remote to be understood, conforms to the notion of the one God. The embrace of Christianity and Islam, even today, is not necessarily to the exclusion of ancestral spirits, nor the essentials of witchcraft and sorcery. The precarious security of albino people in east and central Africa, whose body parts are sought after in traditional “medicine,” is testimony to the fact that these superstitions are alive and well throughout Africa.

From acclaimed literary biographer Claire Tomalin, a complex and fascinating exploration of the early life of the influential writer and public figure H. G. Wells

How did the first forty years of H. G. Wells's life shape the father of science fiction?

From his impoverished childhood in a working-class English family and determination to educate himself at any cost to his complicated marriages, love affair with socialism, and the serious ill health that dominated his twenties and thirties, H. G. Wells's extraordinary early life would set him on a path to become one of the world's most influential writers. The sudden success of The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds transformed his life and catapulted him to international fame; he became the writer who most inspired Orwell and countless others and predicted men walking on the moon seventy years before it happened.

In this remarkable, empathetic biography, Claire Tomalin paints a fascinating portrait of a man like no other, driven by curiosity and desiring reform, a socialist and a futurist whose new and imaginative worlds continue to inspire today.

Spend 24 hours immersed in the rich and fascinating everyday lives of the Vikings.

Between the infamous Lindisfarne raid in 793 CE and the Norman conquest of 1066, the peoples we know now as the Vikings became one of the most far-ranging and influential civilizations in history. The Vikings are frequently portrayed as raiders, marauding across medieval Europe and Britain, but the culture and society of the medieval Nordic peoples was so much more diverse, multifaceted and influential than it is often depicted.

In 24 Hours in the Viking World, author and Viking expert Kirsten Wolf chronicles an hour in the life of 24 individuals from every corner of Viking society over the course of a single day. From the warrior to the thrall, the shipbuilder to the farmer, the poet to the oracle, each chapter offers a snapshot of the world as it was in medieval Scandinavia, and an insight into how these people lived, loved, worked, fought and died.

The latest entry in the bestselling 24 Hours series, 24 Hours in the Viking World presents an absorbing, grounded, and tangible look at what it was really like to be alive during this pivotal era in history.
