The routine works beautifully for the version of you who sleeps well, wakes early, has predictable demands, and is never interrupted. Then ordinary life returns, the system collapses, and you conclude that you lack discipline. A Rhythm You Can Actually Keep challenges the habit of designing daily structures for ideal conditions rather than the circumstances in which they must operate. William R. Stanek helps you build a sustainable approach around variable energy, work, family obligations, interruptions, and the need for recovery. You will learn to reduce an ideal routine until it remains useful on a difficult day, establish a dependable minimum, and leave room for stronger days without requiring them. A workable structure may look less ambitious on paper. Its strength is that it continues to serve you after motivation and perfect conditions are gone.

“We are matter and long to be received by an Earth that conceived us, which accepts and reconstitutes us, its children, each of us, without exception, every one. The journey is long, and then we start homeward, fathomless as to what home might make of us.”When Chris Dombrowski burst onto the literary scene with Body of Water, the book was acclaimed as “a classic” (Jim Harrison) and its author compared with John McPhee. Dombrowski begins the highly anticipated The River You Touch with a question as timely as it is profound: “What does a meaningful, mindful, sustainable inhabitance on this small planet look like in the anthropocene?”He answers this fundamental question of our time initially by listening lovingly to rivers and the land they pulse through in his adopted home of Montana. Transplants from the post-industrial Midwest, he and his partner, Mary, assemble a life based precariously on her income as a schoolteacher, his as a poet and fly-fishing guide. Before long, their first child arrives, followed soon after by two more, all “free beings in whom flourishes an essential kind of knowing […], whose capacity for wonder may be the beacon by which we see ourselves through this dark epoch.” And around the young family circles a community of friends—river-rafting guides and conservationists, climbers and wildlife biologists—who seek to cultivate a way of living in place that moves beyond the mythologized West of appropriation and extraction.Moving seamlessly from the quotidian—diapers, the mortgage, a threadbare bank account—to the metaphysical—time, memory, how to live a life of integrity—Dombrowski illuminates the experience of fatherhood with intimacy and grace. Spending time in wild places with their children, he learns that their youthful sense of wonder at the beauty and connectivity of the more-than-human world is not naivete to be shed, but rather wisdom most of us lose along the way—wisdom that is essential for the possibility of transformation.

From Carefree To Deep Despair To New Life
I thought country-club living at home in Long Island during college, with no job or accountability, was the perfect life. Then came a trip to Africa during the Congo revolutions in a small search and rescue plane with my pilot uncle. I faced imminent death four times, and a girl I arranged to go on the other plane died. That started a 9-year downhill spiral.
Back in the States, it was one illness and surgery after another, and two more knocks on death's door. Things got so bad, I had a brick wall built in front of my New York City brownstone bedroom window, without permission. My psychological report said: "Stephen is in urgent need of help. He could self-destruct at any moment." My brother Michael had left home totally stressed out. When he returned from home a completely different person, I was torn between jealousy and curiosity. I accepted an invite to visit him in Los Angeles. There the most shocking awakening happened. Instantly, I felt amazing and knew: ALL IS WELL. And my illnesses were gone!
Now what? When I begrudgingly accepted a restaurant server job, I never expected it would lead to a successful career in hospitality and sales. I had opportunities to connect with top-of-the-world people. Life expanded in all areas, as I learned to expect the unexpected, along with swallowing my pride. A job associate once asked me, "How come things happen to you that don't happen to us?" The answers are what this book is all about.
All that and a happy marriage. Okay, Becky proposed, so who's perfect? During our 35th anniversary vow renewal, I surprised her by proposing on one knee with a diamond ring, as our friends and family cheered. She said YES!
There are jewels in this book that can transform your life!
