Summary

How to Influence explores the art of persuasion, delving into communication skills, body language, and psychological techniques to build trust and influence others ethically. It reveals how understanding nonverbal cues, such as posture and facial expressions, offers insights into unspoken thoughts and feelings. Ethical influence, rather than manipulation, is the core focus, emphasizing transparency and mutual respect in all interactions. The book is uniquely valuable because it combines the science of persuasive communication with practical applications. Drawing from social psychology and communication theory, it presents complex ideas in an accessible style, supported by real-world examples and case studies. Readers will learn how to frame messages effectively, apply strategies like reciprocity, and manage conflicts constructively. Progressing step-by-step, the book culminates in building lasting trust and tailoring communication for different audiences.

His wife died before their second son turned one. How can he keep her memory alive when there's so much he wants to forget?

There was a time before his wife got sick when Gonzalo could think about other things. Where humor was more than a coping mechanism. Life wasn't all about treatments and recovery, or the emptiness he felt when she died.

They had kids together. Young kids. Less than a year after their youngest was born and suddenly he was strapping them both into their car seats to drive to their mother's funeral.

He used to think he was the glue holding the household together. It didn't take long for him to realize how wrong he'd been. A grieving husband is in no condition to raise kids alone. There were times when he wanted to toss himself into a raging river that would suck him under and bash his skull on the rocks. That's always an option for another day. For now, he'll just squash those feelings and drive the kids to daycare.

Does it get easier? Of course. But not right away. They say that hope only comes at the end of a long dark journey, but that isn't entirely true because the journey never really ends. But that means there's good news: hope is everywhere you look.

In this 2023 conversation with Justine Willis Toms, award-winning documentary filmmaker Dan Drasin explores scientific findings of the continuity of human consciousness beyond the physical brain and body. Drasin suggests that the “greater reality” beyond physical life might be analogous to an ocean, and the soul to a surfer’s wave that has form and endurance but is not separate from the ocean.
Many scientists posit that consciousness resides in the material brain, but Drasin explores the afterlife in light of what is now emerging, in some branches of science, as post-materialism. Related phenomena include messages from the “other side” that show up in electronic devices – sound recorders, television sets and computer screens. Drasin also describes how language acts as a filter in how we perceive the world. He says, “Language affects our perceptions and tends to reflect back to us our own cultural norms and presuppositions." This deep dialogue points out how we are surrounded by life beyond the physical. Matter vibrates at a lower frequency, thus we are able to perceive it with our senses. However, there is much that is constantly going on beyond the range of our ordinary senses.
Daniel Drasin is the author of A New Science of the Afterlife: Space, Time, and the Consciousness Code (Park Street Press 2023)
