Sinopse

"Brainscapes" invites readers on a captivating journey through the intricate landscape of the human brain, exploring three fundamental concepts: neuroplasticity, cognitive mapping, and the brain-body connection. This accessible guide unravels the complexities of our most vital organ, challenging long-held beliefs about cognitive development and offering new perspectives on holistic health.

The book progresses from basic brain anatomy to in-depth explorations of how our brains adapt, create mental representations, and interact with our physical well-being. By framing the brain as a terrain to be explored, "Brainscapes" makes abstract neuroscientific concepts tangible and memorable. It draws upon cutting-edge research, including neuroimaging studies and case studies of individuals with extraordinary cognitive abilities, to support its central thesis that understanding the brain's landscape is key to unlocking human potential.

What sets this book apart is its innovative use of metaphor and visualization, making it accessible to a wide audience while maintaining scientific rigor. As readers navigate through chapters on neuroplasticity, cognitive mapping, and the brain-body connection, they gain practical insights for improving memory, maintaining cognitive health, and managing stress.

"Brainscapes" not only illuminates the geography of the mind but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the remarkable organ that defines our humanity.

The human body is the primary instrument of war, yet those waging war often confront soldiers' bodies in a detached or merely intellectual way. In The Tenderness of Silent Minds, Martha C. Nussbaum, a leading thinker on emotion, morality, and justice, conducts a pioneering study of Benjamin Britten's musical representations of the tender male body amidst the brutality of war, and their ability to transform consciousness by evoking potent, non-personal emotions.

Offering a reading of Britten's views about the value and beauty of the body that situates these in the context of his thirty-nine year partnership with his lover, the singer Peter Pears, and also surveying pacifist themes in works written both before and after War Requiem, Nussbaum presents a compelling framework for critically assessing Britten's oeuvre. Nussbaum engages with a remarkably wide range of Britten's works, examining his treatment of aggression and its roots in his collaborations with the poet W. H. Auden, offering readings of the value placed on the body in early partnerships with Britten's beloved and singer Peter Pears, and surveying pacifist themes in Britten's earlier works. The analysis throughout is enriched with perspectives from Britten's personal letters and thoughtful study of the social and political backdrop of fear and homophobic disgust in mid-twentieth century Britain.

    Why this book?
In many ways, Haber is one of those Spanish verbs that really does not get the attention it deserves. It constantly surprises us just how misunderstood and misused it is.
Even though Haber often plays a secondary role in our sentence structures and one of its biggest jobs is to work as a ‘helper’ verb, you will discover that Haber, is by no means a ‘runner up’ verb!
Once you learn to manage and use it in a fluent and controlled manner, your Spanish will move ahead leaps and bounds.
    About this book.
This book is designed to take you from the basic yet vital uses of Haber all the way through to what some might describe as the most complex Spanish sentences you can make. It includes:
    ·        Clear and unambiguous explanations
    ·        Step by step progress through the tenses
    ·        Frequent tests to check your understanding
    ·        Interesting expressions used with Haber

Ambassador Morgenthau’s memoirs of his years in the service of the United States in Constantinople, (today Istanbul), are an important primary historical resource for the study of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian Genocide. During this genocide, approximately 1,500,000 Armenians living in Anatolia were murdered in an attempt to rid Turkey of its non-Turkish populations. Mr. Morgenthau left Turkey a frustrated man, having done all that he was able through diplomatic circles to halt the murders, to no avail.Today, Turkey’s official position is that their attempt to annihilate the Armenian population in Turkey was not a genocide. In 2010, the American House Foreign Relations Committee passed House Resolution 252, officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide.“If we hope to stop future genocides we need to admit to those horrific acts of the past. When Hitler had to convince his cohorts that the world would let them get away with it, he turned to them and said, ‘Who today speaks of the annihilation of the Armenians?’,” said Congressman Brad Sherman, co-sponsor of the resolution. “The last act of any genocide is genocide denial, and the first act of preventing the next genocide is to acknowledge past acts of genocide.” (Introduction by Margaret Espaillat)

This is a combo book about the middle ages, which comprises the following titles:
1 - Middle Ages: In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or Middle Ages time period lasted around from the fifth to the late 15th centuries, likewise to the postclassical period of worldwide history. It started with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and transitioned into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.
2 - Black Death: Here we have it: We may be looking at the years 2020-2021 and think a certain virus has been bad for the world population. However, what happened in these two years is nothing, proportionally, to the hundreds of millions of people who got wiped out by rat infestations spreading insanitary bacteria, resulting in the disease and death of huge parts of the European population in the mid-centuries.
The genesis or origin of the Black Death is a point of contention. The epidemic started in Central Asia or East Asia, but it wasn't till 1347 that it made its conclusive presence in Crimea. It spread out through the Mediterranean Basin, reaching Africa, Western Asia, and the remainder of Europe through Constantinople, Sicily, and the Italian Peninsula, probably brought by fleas surviving on black rats carried by Genoese servant ships.
3 - Crusaders: The Crusades are one of those dark chapters in history that we would rather forget, especially religious people. In name of the church, or other religions, like the Muslim faith, people killed, destroyed, looted, and burned cities to the ground. There is nothing “holy” about attacking and plundering, yet this is what they did.
The Crusades were a series of spiritual fights in the Middle Ages period that were begun, supported, and sometimes ordered by the Latin Church.
