An indispensable guide to parents of hockey hopefuls

At a time of great change in hockey, Justin Davis exposes the dark underbelly of the journey from the minors to the big leagues

Hockey culture: it’s a commonly used phrase inside the game, glorifying sacrifice, toughness, loyalty, and a sense of identity. Justin Davis viewed this culture as something he was lucky enough to experience. After all, he’d won a Memorial Cup after leading the tournament in scoring, and he’d been drafted by the Washington Capitals. “In my mind,” he says, “I was the normal one.” Unfortunately, after stepping outside the game, he began to recognize the racism, sexual abuse and bullying that was so deeply ingrained in the sport. And then, as his own children grew into teenagers, the curtain was pulled back, the memories came rushing forward, and he was horrified: “Why was I naked in a bus bathroom for four hours with seven teammates? What happened to my brain, and why can’t I remember the simplest things? How did I end up living in a basement where the strangers upstairs were clearly engaged in domestic abuse?”

As it navigates the sport’s darkest corridors, Conflicted Scars shares the story of the common Canadian player and offers a guide for parents who need to know how and why a typical teenager with NHL dreams, from a small town, now lives anxiously, introvertedly, and battling emotional detachment.

William the First, who was also called William the Conqueror and in some cases William the Bastard, was the first Norman emperor of England, ruling from 1066 till his death in 1087. Around this time, many wars and battles were waged over the kingdom and distribution of territories in Europe. France, the Anglo-Saxons, and Scandinavian troops were engaged in raids, struggles, and battles to claim their lands and gains.
One of the most significant times in William’s life was that as the Duke of Normandy. His politics, terms, rules, and treaties were different and refreshing for comparison to how things had been done previously.
I invite you to learn more about this first king of England, who lived almost 1,000 years ago.

When your mind is on fire, how do you extinguish the flame?

Here’s one thing college doesn’t teach you: Adulting is hard. Studies show that approximately 50 percent of adults ages eighteen to twenty-four suffer from anxiety. Mindfire takes readers along on the emotional journey that is growing up, and the anxiety that comes with it. Written by twenty-two-year-old journalist and influencer Carrie Berk, this book is a raw and vulnerable exploration into the parts of being in your twenties that aren’t always pretty.

Berk, who was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and OCD at eighteen, provides intimate diary entries that unveil what it’s like learning to cope in her adulting era. What do you do when panic strikes unexpectedly? Or when you’re plagued with intrusive thoughts on vacation, even when everything is seemingly fine? How about when you lose someone for the first time? Anxiety can make you question your core beliefs and leave you more confused than ever. Mindfire is a road map for anyone who has ever struggled with their mental health and felt alone.

The book dives into the much-misunderstood category of mental health. Packed with real-life therapy definitions and self-care suggestions, Mindfire shows how you can level up and learn to love yourself—anxiety and all.

Each chapter of "Trippin' through the Oil Patch" is a story all by itself. But each story links with the next, as the book reveals the life of transient laborers in the Rocky Mountain oil fields during the 1940s and 50s. While war mounted and raged in Europe and the Pacific, oil field kids moved with their dads and moms to one oil patch and trailer camp after another, chasing black gold to fuel a nation at war. With each story, the narrator, Raymond, moves closer to the end of his oil field days, when, at the age of twelve, his dad is killed in an oil rig explosion. In Trippin', Gayle, whose childhood is the basis of this memoir, says, "I was afraid that I would forget my father. I would never speak with him again. I would never hear his voice. With these stories, I could keep talking with my dad. I could hold on to his presence until I could walk on alone. His stories saved me."

A Warning to the Curious - From...

    M R James

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.
