  In the 1950s, Dave Moore, a young actor born and raised in Minneapolis, accepted a newscaster position with the local CBS affiliate, WCCO-TV-a job Walter Cronkite turned down. For the next three decades, until his death in 1998, he delivered the evening news with integrity, conviction, humor, and flair, making him a fixture in Minnesota living rooms.  
  At the end of his weekly news-in-review program, Moore on Sunday (or, as he liked to call it, “Moron Sunday”), Moore often signed off by reciting a poem. These poems, composed by Moore’s son Peter and collected here for the first time, offer a fresh and funny take on the common and not-so-common stuff of our everyday lives.   While Frank O'Connor was known primarily as one of Ireland's finest short-story writers, he was also an accomplished translator. In the long line of Irish writers given to translating poems in Irish into poems written in English – a tradition stretching back at least as far as Jonathan Swift – he stands out above all the rest.
  Between the mid-1920s and the mid-1960s, O'Connor published 121 translations that give voice to the full range of this centuries-old tradition. Collected here in full for the first time, O'Connor's work shows an uncanny aptitude for carrying over into English verse many of the riches to be found in the originals – the ancient voice of the Hag of Beare lamenting her decline into old age; the voices of the early monks describing the Irish landscape, Irish weather, their religious faith, and, in at least one instance, their cat; the voice of Hugh O'Rourke's wife torn between loyalty to her husband and a rising desire for her seducer. All these voices haunted O'Connor throughout his career, whatever else he was doing. The collection includes the Irish-language sources for all 121 translations along with literal translations, enabling the reader to see what O'Connor started from.
  O'Connor's translations sprang from a compulsive desire to breathe life into Ireland's past, to 'look back to look forward,' as he once put it; for him the Irish-language tradition was not for scholars and archives alone, but formed a living body of work vitally relevant to an Ireland that seemed puzzlingly indifferent to it.
  Thanks to O'Connor's profound love of his country's language and its rich, literary subsoil – 'a literature of which no Irishman need feel ashamed', he once said – these voices from Ireland's past can still be heard. Strikingly modern in tone, they conjoin flesh and spirit, the sacred and the secular, in a way that speaks to humankind.

  Edith Newbold Jones was born in New York on 24th January 1862.   Born into wealth, this background of privilege gave her a wealth of experience to eventually, after several false starts, produce many works based on it culminating in her 1921 Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘The Age of Innocence’ 
   
  Marriage to Edward Robbins Wharton, who was 12 years her senior in 1885 seemed to offer much and for some years they travelled extensively.  After some years it was apparent that her husband suffered from acute depression and so the travelling ceased and they retired to ‘The Mount’, their estate designed by Edith.  By 1908 his condition was said to be incurable and prior to divorcing Edward in 1913 she began an affair, in 1908, with Morton Fullerton, a Times journalist, who was her intellectual equal and allowed her writing talents to push forward and write the novels for which she is so well known.  
   
  Acknowledged as one of the great American writers Wharton was also a dazzling though largely unrecognised poet.  Her talents allowed her to create poems that both capture and explore many situations of life and society.  
   
  Edith Wharton died of a stroke in 1937 at the Domaine Le Pavillon Colombe, her 18th-century house on Rue de Montmorency in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, in France.
