Sinopsis

The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1589 and 1593. It is considered by some to be Shakespeare's first play,[a] and is often seen as showing his first tentative steps in laying out some of the themes and motifs with which he would later deal in more detail; for example, it is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy.

The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behaviour of people in love. The highlight of the play is considered by some to be Launce, the clownish servant of Proteus, and his dog Crab, to whom "the most scene-stealing non-speaking role in the canon" has been attributed.

As the play begins, Valentine is preparing to leave Verona for Milan so as to broaden his horizons. He begs his best friend, Proteus, to come with him, but Proteus is in love with Julia, and refuses to leave. Disappointed, Valentine bids Proteus farewell and goes on alone. Meanwhile, Julia is discussing Proteus with her maid, Lucetta, who tells Julia that she thinks Proteus is fond of her. Julia, however, acts coyly, embarrassed to admit that she likes him.

Lucetta then produces a letter; she will not say who gave it to her, but teases Julia that it was Valentine's servant, Speed, who brought it from Proteus. Julia, still unwilling to reveal her love in front of Lucetta, angrily tears up the letter. She sends Lucetta away, but then, realising her own rashness, she picks up the fragments of the letter and kisses them, trying to piece them back together.

    Maya Civilization - Pyramids...

The Maya civilization emerged from the fertile lands of Mesoamerica, where early agricultural societies gradually developed into one of the most advanced cultures of the ancient world. Long before the rise of monumental cities and towering pyramids, the ancestors of the Maya lived in small villages, relying on farming, hunting, and fishing for sustenance. Corn, or maize, became the cornerstone of their diet and played a central role in their mythology, economy, and daily life. Over time, these early settlements expanded, evolving into complex societies with trade networks, religious practices, and political hierarchies.
The roots of Maya civilization can be traced back to the Preclassic period, around 2000 BCE. During this time, small communities scattered across present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador began cultivating staple crops such as maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers. As agricultural techniques improved, populations grew, leading to the formation of larger settlements. Villages transitioned into regional centers, where early forms of leadership and governance emerged. These developments set the stage for the sophisticated city-states that would later define the Maya world.
The Maya were not isolated in their cultural development. They shared Mesoamerica with other influential civilizations, most notably the Olmecs, who thrived along the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The Olmecs, often considered the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, left a lasting impact on the Maya through their artistic styles, religious beliefs, and ceremonial architecture. The colossal stone heads of the Olmecs, their early writing systems, and their concept of a sacred ballgame were all absorbed and adapted by the Maya. This exchange of ideas helped shape the foundations of Maya civilization, leading to the rise of the first great Maya cities.

Thoughtful, wide-ranging essays exploring food as a source of pleasure, practical creativity, and sustenance

Food is the primary way andrea bennett connects with the world. They worked in the restaurant industry for a decade, and though they don’t eat much meat and can’t eat gluten, they take as much pleasure in food as Jeffrey Steingarten, Anthony Bourdain, or Guy Fieri. When they want to show someone they care, they cook them a meal. The essays in Hearty offer a snapshot of the North American cultural relationship to food and eating. Hearty dives deep into specific foods, such as chutney, carrots, and ice cream, but also explores appetite and desire in food media, the art of substitution, seed saving and the triumphs and trials of being a home gardener, how the food system works (and doesn’t), and complex societal narratives around health and pleasure. Combining journalism, cultural commentary, and personal reflection, Hearty follows bennett’s curiosity into kitchens, gardens, fields, and factories, offering a compassionate and compelling perspective on food from seed to table.

This is the first English-language intellectual biography of the German-Jewish philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945), a leading figure on the Weimar intellectual scene and one of the last and finest representatives of the liberal-idealist tradition. Edward Skidelsky traces the development of Cassirer's thought in its historical and intellectual setting. He presents Cassirer, the author of The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, as a defender of the liberal ideal of culture in an increasingly fragmented world, and as someone who grappled with the opposing forces of scientific positivism and romantic vitalism. Cassirer's work can be seen, Skidelsky argues, as offering a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict between the "two cultures" of science and the humanities--and between the analytic and continental traditions in philosophy. The first comprehensive study of Cassirer in English in two decades, this book will be of great interest to analytic and continental philosophers, intellectual historians, political and cultural theorists, and historians of twentieth-century Germany.
