Sinopse

KING JOHN, an anthology meticulously composed by William Shakespeare and edited by Sidney Lee, encapsulates a confluence of dramatic narration and historical analysis. This collection, beyond merely presenting the text of Shakespeare's lesser-studied play, includes critical essays and annotations which explore the complex themes of legitimacy, power, and human frailty. The editorial guidance of Lee ensures a diversity in approach and interpretation, offering readers both traditional and contemporary perspectives on the text. The anthology excels not only in its literary richness but also in its ability to present a cohesive narrative through a multitude of stylistic lenses, thus reframing an oft-overlooked play within a broader literary and cultural context. The contributors, led by Sidney Lee, are scholars and historians whose deep engagement with Elizabethan and Jacobean drama add layers of depth to the understanding of KING JOHN. Their collective expertise spans several areas, including historical linguistics, political history, and literary criticism, aligning the anthology with scholarly discussions on the nature of leadership and morality. This collected work, therefore, serves not only as a literary exploration but also as a cultural and historical discourse, reflecting on the enduring influence of Shakespeare's works. KING JOHN is recommended for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Shakespearean drama who seek to delve deeply into the intricacies of one of Shakespeare's more enigmatic plays. The anthology offers a unique educational experience by combining critical essays with the original text, enriched by the diverse scholarly voices of the editors and contributors. This book invites readers to engage in a comprehensive reflection on the play's themes, enhanced by expert analysis, fostering a richer understanding and ongoing dialogue about the work's relevance and interpretation.

The Final Problem is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring his detective character Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in Strand Magazine under the title "The Adventure of the Final Problem" in December 1893. It appears in book form as part of the collection The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story, set in 1891, introduced Holmes's archenemy, the criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty. Conan Doyle later ranked "The Final Problem" fourth on his personal list of the twelve best Holmes stories.Holmes arrives at Dr. John Watson's residence one evening in a somewhat agitated state and with grazed and bleeding knuckles. Much to Watson's surprise, he had apparently escaped three separate murder attempts that day after a visit from Professor Moriarty, who warned Holmes to withdraw from his pursuit of justice against him to avoid any regrettable outcome. First, just as he was turning a street corner, a cab suddenly rushed towards him and Holmes just managed to leap out of the way in time. Second, while Holmes was walking along the street, a brick fell from the roof of a house, just missing the detective. He then called the police to search the whole area but could not prove that it was anything other than an accident. Finally, on his way to Watson's house, he was attacked by a thug armed with a cosh. Holmes managed to overcome his assailant and handed him to the police but admitted that there was virtually no hope of proving that the man was in the employ of the criminal mastermind.Famous works of the author Arthur Conan Doyle: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Stories of Sherlock Holmes, The Lost World.

"The Adventure of the Gloria Scott", is one of 12 stories in the collection, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story is related mainly by Holmes rather than Watson, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his powers of deduction, having treated it as a mere hobby until this time.
This is one of the two Sherlock Holmes stories in which a protagonist is haunted by an old acquaintance for an old crime. It is also one of his many stories that deal with the fate of characters who return to England after having spent time abroad in the colonies of the British empire.
