Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance amid a whirlwind of sxuality, untethered in the person of Maggie the Cat. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sxuality repressed in the agony of her husband, Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. Williams, as he so often did with his plays, rewrote Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for many years?the present version was originally produced at the American Shakespeare Festival in 1974 with all the changes that made Williams finally declare the text to be definitive, and was most recently produced on Broadway in the 2003-04 season. This definitive edition also includes Williams' essay "Person-to-Person," Williams' notes on the various endings, and a short chronology of the author's life. One of America's greatest living playwrights, as well as a friend and colleague of Williams, Edward Albee has written a concise introduction to the play from a playwright's perspective, examining the candor, sensuality, power, and impact of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof then and now.

The Poetry of Alan Seeger -...

Alan Seeger

Alan Seeger was born on 22nd June 1888 in New York. When he was one the family moved to Staten Island and nine years later onwards to Mexico for two years.

After attending several elite preparatory schools he enrolled at Harvard in 1906, where he also edited and wrote for the Harvard Monthly.

He graduated in 1910 and went to live the life of a bohemian in New York’s Greenwich Village, and thereafter moved to Paris to continue his poetry writing in the Latin quarter.

War’s looming dark shadow was to have a transformative effect on the young poet and on 24th August 24th 1914 he joined the French Foreign Legion so he could fight for the Allies.

On American Independence day, 4th July 1917 whilst urging on his fellow soldiers in a successful charge at Belloy-en-Santerre he was hit several times by machine gun fire and died.

His poetry was published posthumously later that year, it although not a great success his poem ‘I Have a Rendezvous with Death . . .’ is now regarded as a classic.

On the sixth anniversary of his death a memorial to the American volunteers was unveiled in the Place des Etats-Unis.

The memorial was created by Jean Boucher who had used a photograph of Seeger as his inspiration.

Also inscribed upon it are Seeger’s moving words: “They did not pursue worldly rewards; they wanted nothing more than to live without regret, brothers pledged to the honour implicit in living one's own life and dying one's own death. Hail, brothers! Goodbye to you, the exalted dead! To you, we owe two debts of gratitude forever: the glory of having died for France, and the homage due to you in our memories.”

Second City: Chicago's Famed...

Since 1959, Chicago's The Second City improvisational comedy troupe has played a critical role in developing some of the most successful comedians in the United States and Canada. Comedians such as Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, James Belushi, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, and Richard Kind, to name a few, have all performed with The Second City. Between 1991 and 1997, L.A. Theatre Works, in conjunction with Chicago Theatres on the Air, had the pleasure of producing a number of Second City performances featuring Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Amy Sedaris, Marsha Mason, Edward Asner, and Paul Dinelo.
Colbert, Dinelo, and Sedaris went on to create the hit show Strangers With Candy for Comedy Central, and Amy's best-selling book, "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence is both witty and hilarious". More recently, both Carell and Colbert have enjoyed immense success beginning with their supporting roles in The Daily Show. Carell's show, The Office, is a hit on NBC, and his movies are box office boffos. Colbert has spun his Daily Show character off into his own highly successful The Colbert Report.

It’s raw, uncomplicated, tells a story in simple language that is easy to read. And most of it rhymes! Hopefully, my poems will take my reader on an emotional journey to experience what makes beautiful Lakes Entrance and East Gippsland unique amongst places. This is a book of collected poems of time and place, compiled in the season of the coronavirus 2020, during lockdown. ‘You can take the girl out of Lakes Entrance, but you can’t take Lakes Entrance out of the girl.’

Halloween is now firmly established in the Calendar as a favourite; to go trick or treating and an excuse for kids everywhere to dress up in outlandish attire and collect vast quantities of sweets. Equally adults everywhere are prone to switch off the lights and pretend to be out!  In our collection the poems show that words have been used to enthral and suggest dark mysterious forces beyond our control for quite some time. With authors of the ability of Keats, Poe, Byron, Sheehan & Shakespeare, to nourish these primeval fears the poems have an unsettling nature as all bad things should!
