Sinopse

Dog Scent Tracking explores the fascinating world of canine olfaction, revealing how dogs use their extraordinary sense of smell in various applications, such as search and rescue and wildlife conservation. It details the biological mechanisms behind a dog's ability to detect and track scents, including how their olfactory system evolved from their wolf ancestors. Readers will discover that a dog's nose isn't just more sensitive than a human's; it processes scent information in a fundamentally different way. The book uniquely combines the biology of canine olfaction with the science of scent dispersal, examining how environmental factors like weather and terrain affect scent tracking. By understanding these factors, handlers can optimize training methods and improve the effectiveness of detection canines. The book progresses from the anatomy and physiology of the canine olfactory system to the practical applications of scent tracking, including law enforcement, medical scent detection, and wildlife conservation.

The epic stories of our planet's 4.54-billion-year history are written in strata―ages-old remnants of ancient seafloors, desert dunes, and riverbeds striping landscapes around the world. In this brilliantly original debut work, science writer Laura Poppick decodes strata to lead us on a journey through four global transformations that made our lives on Earth possible: the first accumulations of oxygen in the atmosphere; the deep freezes of "Snowball Earth"; the rise of mud on land and accompanying proliferation of plants; and the dinosaurs' reign on a hothouse planet
Poppick introduces us to the researchers who have devoted their careers to understanding the events of deep time. She travels to sites as various as a Minnesotan iron mine that runs half a mile deep and a corner of the Australian Outback where glacial deposits date from the coldest times on Earth. Ultimately, she demonstrates that the planet's oceans, continents, atmosphere, life, and ice have always conspired to bring stability to Earth, even if we are only just beginning to understand how these different facets interact.
A work in the tradition of John McPhee, Strata allows us to observe how the planet has responded to past periods of environmental upheaval, and shows how Earth's ancient narratives could hold lessons for our present and future.

Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park", he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large-scale teamwork to the process of invention, and because of that, he is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory. The following, from 1908, is a commemoration at the New York Electrical Show of the 50th anniversary of the first Atlantic cable. Thomas Augustus Watson (January 18, 1854 – December 13, 1934) was as a bookkeeper and a carpenter before becoming an assistant to Alexander Graham Bell, aiding in the the invention of the telephone in 1876. He is best known because his name was one of the first words spoken over the telephone. "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you," were the first words Bell said using the new invention, according to Bell's laboratory notebook. Guglielmo Marconi (25 April 1874 – 20 July 1937) was an Italian inventor, known for his pioneering work on long distance radio transmission and radio telegraph system. Marconi shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy". As an entrepreneur, businessman, and founder of the The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in Britain in 1897, Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists. The following is from a talk he gave in 1935 about how he received the first transatlantic message by wireless telegraphy.

What Does God Think about Technology?
From smartphones to self-driving cars to space travel, new technologies can inspire us. But the breakneck pace of change can also frighten us. So how do Christians walk by faith through the innovations of Silicon Valley? And how does God relate to our most powerful innovators?
To build a biblical theology of technology, journalist and tech optimist Tony Reinke examines nine key texts from Scripture to show how the world's discoveries are divinely orchestrated. Ultimately, what we believe about God determines how we respond to human invention. With the help of several theologians and inventors throughout history, Reinke dispels twelve common myths in the church and offers fourteen ethical convictions to help Christians live by faith in the age of big tech.
