Sinopsis

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: The parallel lives of two of the great masters of British literature: Dickens and Thackeray

Published in book form in 1848, “The Book of Snobs” is a collection of satirical articles by British author William Makepeace Thackeray.
The pieces first appeared successfully in satirical magazine Punch as “The Snobs of England, by One of Themselves,” and are sketches of London characters that display Thackeray’s virtuosity in quick character-drawing.
The pieces, which were immensely popular and thrust Thackeray into widespread public view, were rigorously revised before their collection in book form and omitted the numbers which dealt with then current political issues.
This humorous study begins with the assertion that 'Snobs are to be studied like other objects of Natural Science.'

Mary Carlson didn't plan to become a veterinarian, let alone the caretaker of many cats, two huskies, and horses (some with manners, some without). A suburban Chicago girl, she only knew about the American West from her uncle's stories. But thanks to him, she moved to Colorado for college—and, after falling in love with a veterinary student, settled there for good. Her husband's work inspired her to leave teaching, become a vet herself, and open a feline-exclusive clinic. Along the way, there were grueling years of vet school, a shattered hip, an enduring love, illness, and death—and the rediscovery that life, especially one filled with delightful animals, is worth living.

From its first use by the Ancient Egyptians, the barrel has left an unmistakable imprint on human history. The Romans used the barrel in all corners of their vast empire, and explorers could not have charted the globe or opened up trade routes without barrels to store their food and water. And in all its thousands of years of use, the barrel's basic design has barely changed at all—a testament to its sheer and simple perfection.

Cask Strength is more than a history book. In it, Mike Gerrard, an award-winning travel and drinks writer, investigates the making, buying, and selling of barrels and details how drinks like wine, tequila, rum, cognac, and others are enhanced by specific kinds of barrel production.

Today, modern distillers, brewers, and wine-makers continue to use barrels in new, creative ways—with the barrel providing up to 60-70% of their flavors. Without the barrel, we would have no bourbon, no oak-aged chardonnay, no barrel-aged stouts . . . and no tabasco sauce, either.

Gerrard's expertise and palpable passion for good beverages interestingly made will ignite the curiosities of booze fans and history buffs alike as Cask Strength traces the simple splendor of the barrel.
