Sinopse

In "Essays on Things," William Lyon Phelps offers a captivating exploration of the mundane yet profoundly significant aspects of everyday life through a collection of essays that reflect his erudite yet accessible literary style. Drawing on personal anecdotes and astute observations, Phelps delves into topics ranging from nature and art to human experience and societal norms, revealing the intricate connections between these elements and the greater human condition. His narrative is infused with a blend of scholarly insight and engaging prose, positioning the essays within the context of early 20th-century American thought, where the appreciation of the ordinary became a lens through which broader philosophical questions could be examined. Phelps, a distinguished professor of English at Yale, was known for his deep engagement with literature and the arts, which undoubtedly informed the reflective nature of these essays. His academic background, combined with his passion for demystifying complex ideas, allowed him to craft a work that resonates with both literary scholars and general readers. Phelps's ability to articulate the beauty found in the commonplace stems from his belief in literature's power to elevate everyday experiences. "Essays on Things" is not just an examination of the ordinary; it is an invitation to readers to reflect on their perceptions and invigorate their appreciation for the seemingly trivial aspects of life. For anyone seeking to find depth in the commonplace or to revisit the art of reflection, Phelps's essays serve as an essential roadmap.

A Pagan Polemic curates the evolving perspective of Jack Loeffler—itinerant wanderer, environmental warrior, storyteller, and story collector—whose true education began when he was marched into the Nevada desert one day at dawn to play "The Stars and Stripes Forever" during an atomic bomb test a scant few miles away. Since that day in 1957, Jack's mission in life has been to record peoples of the borderlands and to bring "indigenous mindedness" to the forefront of the conversation about our precarious environments and our decaying planet. A Pagan Polemic is a sweeping manifesto of Jack's core beliefs and long experience as a fierce (and funny) advocate for Nature and Nature-mindedness and against poisonous politics and policies.

In a city once voted "Worst Place to Live in the UK," an unlikely musical revolution took place. SUGAR, GRAVY, PLEASURE tells the story of the Sugar Club, Peterborough's legendary alternative music venue that became a haven for misfits, music lovers, and anyone who didn't quite fit in elsewhere.
Pete Elderkin's memoir chronicles his journey from playing in local indie band The Pleasureheads to creating one of the UK's longest-running alternative club nights. Through the evolving musical landscapes of grunge, Britpop, and nu metal, the Sugar Club offered a safe space where people could dress how they wanted, dance how they liked, and hear music that wouldn't be played anywhere else in town.
With a colourful cast of characters including loyal doormen, eccentric DJs, amorous couples under the piano, and a mysterious regular who disappeared into the "Fenland Bermuda Triangle," this is more than just a story about music – it's a celebration of community, friendship, and the power of creating your own culture when none exists. From dodging skinheads and navigating bomb scares to hosting early performances by soon-to-be-famous bands, Elderkin captures both the chaos and the camaraderie of running an alternative club in a provincial city.
Written with humour and heart, SUGAR, GRAVY, PLEASURE is an unapologetic tribute to working-class culture, alternative music, and the magical moments that happen when like-minded people find their tribe. It's a reminder that sometimes the best nights of our lives happen not in the big cities, but in the places where we have to make our own entertainment.

I would like to begin by thanking my wonderful wife, Pamela, for continually encouraging me to write this book.
The title of this book, God's Plan for Heaven, Eternity, and the Universe Explained, is exactly that. This book will help you to easily understand God's plan from the beginning of creation all the way to when the human race is over and everyone is living inside eternity with God or separated from God. The only thing that matters for every human being is eternity, and all of God's plan is about how to know him and spend it with him. This book is very different. It is written for everyone, from people with little or no Bible knowledge to even people with advanced knowledge of the Bible who will learn things that most have never even thought about before.
God creating human beings, despite knowing we would sin against him from the very beginning and be born with a sinful nature, is by far the greatest thing God has ever done and will probably be the greatest thing he will ever do in all of eternity. The pleasure we bring him is incalculable, as you will see. This book will help you to understand not only what God has done in his plan, but more importantly why he has done it the way he has done it. Many will think this book is simply my opinion, but everything in this book is based directly on God's word in the Bible or indirectly based on what God has done according to his direct word in the Bible.

Recalling some of the most memorable escapades ever conducted in the Canadian Arctic with bush planes, Flying to Extremes takes place in the late ’60s and early ’70s from a base at Yellowknife, in the heart of the Northwest Territories.Beyond recounting so many near-mishaps, this book is also about colourful people: the trappers, prospectors, miners, adventurers and gold-ingot thieves who constituted the fauna at the main bar in Yellowknife in those days. For Arctic dreamers, there was always the flight to the Nahanni River, with its Deadman’s Valley, hot springs, tales of lost or dead prospectors, the many airplanes crashed in pursuit of gold, and much more Nahanni lore. This entertaining book recollects Prinet’s adventures as a young man while capturing the humour, beauty, danger and unique culture of northern communities, in the dramatic landscape of the Canadian Arctic. Readers familiar with the region and those who can only dream of visiting it will both find this title a nostalgic and captivating read.
