Synopsis

In "The Darkness of the Sea: 20+ Horror Stories, Supernatural Tales & Fantastical Adventures," William Hope Hodgson manifests his profound fascination with the eerie and the uncanny through a collection of diverse narratives that traverse the boundaries of reality and imagination. This compendium features Hodgson'Äôs hallmark blend of gothic horror and cosmic dread, employing a vivid, atmospheric prose style that immerses readers in maritime terror and supernatural phenomena. Each tale is meticulously crafted, reflecting the early 20th-century literary context that fused existential contemplation with an exploration of humanity'Äôs relationship to the unknown depths of the sea and the universe beyond. William Hope Hodgson, an influential figure in the horror genre, drew upon his own experiences at sea, serving as a sailor and later as a writer whose life was marked by tragedy and a profound connection with the natural world. His unique perspective is evident in his exploration of liminal spaces, drawing readers into realms where the familiar is rendered disquieting. Hodgson's body of work reflects a deep engagement with themes of isolation, fear, and the supernatural, making him a pivotal precursor to later writers such as H.P. Lovecraft. This collection is highly recommended for readers who appreciate the fusion of horror and fantasy, as well as those drawn to literary traditions that probe the depths of human experience. Hodgson'Äôs masterful storytelling and rich imagery provide a haunting journey into the unknown, appealing to both fans of classical horror and contemporary fantasy alike.

    It's not a river, it's this river.

A hot, motionless afternoon. Enero and El Negro are fishing with Tilo, their dead friend's teenage son. After hours of struggling with a hooked stingray, Enero aims his revolver into the water and shoots it. They hang the ray's enormous corpse from a tree at their campsite and let it go to rot, drawing the attention of some local islanders and igniting a long-simmering fury toward outsiders and their carelessness. It's only the two sisters—the teenage nieces of one of the locals, Aguirre—with their hair black as cowbird feathers and giving off the scent of green grass, who are curious about the trio and invite them to a dance. But the girls are not quite as they seem. As night approaches and tensions rise, Enero and El Negro return to the charged memories of their friend who years ago drowned in this same river.

As uneasy and saturated as a prophetic dream, Not a River is another extraordinary novel by Selva Almada about masculinity, guilt, and irrepressible desire, written in a style that is spare and timeless.

Douglas River is a nightclub owner in Morgantown, West Virginia. River is also a vampire who, after nearly two centuries of bloodsucking, suddenly discovers he's becoming human again--he's starting to see himself in the mirror, blood makes him sick, daylight doesn't bother him, and other worse things are starting to happen.
Normally, this might not present too much of a problem. But in River's case, he needs to find a cure…fast. He's one of the vampire elite, and after his secret leaks out, other vampires want to kill him so they can usurp his position.
River also has the problem of a team of vampire hunters who've been after him for ages, trying to kill him, too.
The unsympathetic and bloodthirsty River is the sort of fellow who loves being godlike and hates the concept of becoming human. He's desperately looking for his cure and will stop at nothing to end his Vampire’s Nightmare.

The story is recounted by the protagonist, Count Antoine de C, in the first person. Hundreds of years ago, Antoine's noble ancestor was responsible for the death of a dark wizard, Michel Mauvais. The wizard's son, Charles le Sorcier, swore revenge on not only him but all his descendants, cursing them to die on reaching the age of 32. The protagonist recounts how his ancestors all died in some mysterious way around the age of 32. The line has dwindled and the castle has been left to fall into disrepair, tower by tower. Finally, Antoine is the only one left, with one poor servant, Pierre, who raised him, and a tiny section of the castle with a single tower is still usable. Antoine has reached adulthood, and his 32nd year is approaching. His servant eventually dies, leaving him completely alone, and he begins exploring the ruined parts of the castle. He finds a trapdoor in one of the oldest parts. Below, he discovers a passage with a locked door at the end. Just as he turns to leave, he hears a noise behind him and sees that the door is open and someone is standing in it. The man attempts to kill him but Antoine kills him first. His dying words reveal that he is none other than Charles, who actually managed to successfully fabricate the elixir of life, enabling him to personally fulfill the curse generation after generation.
