Sinopsis

In "Men of the Deep Waters," William Hope Hodgson masterfully intertwines horror fiction with elements of maritime adventure, crafting a haunting narrative that explores the uncanny depths of the ocean and the psyche. The story revolves around the enigmatic figure of the protagonist, a man grappling with his place in an unforgiving world teeming with primordial terrors. Hodgson's prose is notable for its vivid imagery and lyrical quality, drawing upon the rich literary tradition of Gothic and weird fiction, while echoing themes of isolation and existential dread, evocative of the early 20th century's fascination with the unknown. The fluidity of his writing creates an immersive atmosphere, allowing readers to share in the characters' dread as they confront the primal forces lurking beneath the waves. William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was a pioneering writer whose own experiences as a sailor greatly informed his work. Living in an era marked by rapid technological progress yet deeply rooted in superstition and fear of the unknown, Hodgson's narratives reflect both a fascination with the mysteries of the sea and an intrinsic knowledge of human vulnerability. His unique background as a seaman adds authenticity and depth to the fantastical elements of his stories, highlighting the universal struggle against darkness, both external and internal. "Men of the Deep Waters" is highly recommended for readers intrigued by psychological horror or maritime lore, as well as those seeking to explore Hodgson's significant contribution to the genre. His unsettling exploration of humanity's interaction with the abyss will resonate with fans of Lovecraft and other authors of weird fiction, inviting contemplation of our deepest fears and the unknown realms that lie beyond the horizon.

Edward Alexander Crowley was born on 12th October 1875 to wealthy parents in Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire.

He was educated at Malvern College, Tonbridge School, Eastbourne College and finally Trinity College, Cambridge where he focused on his passions of mountaineering and poetry and published several volumes.

Life for Crowley was to abandon his parents’ Christian faith and instead to inject himself into Western esotericism. In 1898, he joined the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was trained in ceremonial magic before studying both Hindu and Buddhist practices in India.

On his Egyptian honeymoon in 1904 he claimed contact with an entity―Aiwass―who gave him the sacred Book of the Law which served as the basis for the Thelema religion where he identified as its prophet. During the Great War, which he spent in the United States, he claimed to be working for British Intelligence but by the 1920s he had decamped to pursue a libertine lifestyle in Sicily, and in the ensuing scandals was evicted by the Italian Government.

He divided the following two decades between France, Germany, and England, and the continuing promotion of Thelema.

During his life he gained widespread notoriety for his drug use, his bisexuality, and his alarming views on society. In short, polite society frowned on his ways, his thoughts and his influence but to many others his stance had much of value. Even after death he was a darling for the 60’s counterculture but his influence has since waned.

His literary works were both prolific and covered many topics. In the early part of his career he published many poetry books, even plays, before his darker and more forceful works came to dominate his output.

Aleister Crowley died on 1st December 1947 at Hastings in England. He was 72.

Is there anything scarier than a homicidal hospital?

There's no love lost between Imogene and her boyfriend's mother. But when Eleanor is admitted to a sanatorium for her migraines, Imogene takes the high road and visits.

The hospital is housed in a creepy mansion with a chilling past. The medicines being used are a throwback to the days of snake oil and superstition. And while she's there, Imogene bumps into a newly deceased patient.

As hauntings go, this ghost steals the show. And everything else. Turns out Becky Riddell was being treated for kleptomania. Her influence is hard to resist.

Things take a sinister turn when dead bodies start popping up around the sanatorium at an alarming rate. Imogene knows she should investigate, but the last thing she needs is more drama in her life. She has enough thanks to the poltergeist that's been dogging her steps for the past month.

However, if Imogene doesn't figure out who's killing off patients and why, she'll have to move out of her apartment. Thanks to Becky's compulsion, she's pinched so much stuff, there's barely enough room for her and her cat. Besides, El would never forgive her if his mother became one of the not-so-dearly departed.

The themes that thread through these nine accomplished stories are drawn from the great tradition of the twentieth-century weird tale, and they are suffused with a distinctly cosmopolitan, European feel. Mark Samuels writes about the fundamental fears of modern life, especially the effects of isolation and the dislocation that city dwellers can experience in their inhospitable, man-made environment.
