Sinossi

Carnacki, the Ghost Finder is a collection of short stories by British author William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1913. The stories follow the adventures of Thomas Carnacki, a paranormal investigator who uses scientific methods to investigate hauntings and other supernatural phenomena.

Carnacki is a unique character in the world of paranormal fiction, as he is a rationalist who refuses to accept the existence of ghosts and other supernatural beings until he has evidence to prove their existence. He approaches each case with a cool, analytical mind and uses various gadgets and tools, such as a camera that can capture ghostly images, to help him in his investigations.

The stories themselves are classic examples of the "weird tale" genre, and feature a wide range of supernatural creatures and phenomena, including haunted houses, spectral hands, and even a haunted violin. While the stories are somewhat formulaic, with each one following a similar pattern of Carnacki being called in to investigate a haunting, conducting his investigation, and ultimately solving the mystery, they are also highly entertaining and well-written, with a strong sense of atmosphere and tension.

William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was a British author who wrote in a variety of genres, including horror, science fiction, and fantasy. He is perhaps best known for his novel "The House on the Borderland" (1908) and his short story collection "Carnacki, the Ghost Finder" (1913).

1901: Back from their honeymoon in Italy, Emma and Derrick are adapting to married life as they return to their duties at their jointly owned newspaper, the Newport Messenger. The Elms, coal baron Edward Berwind's newly completed Bellevue Avenue estate, is newsworthy for two reasons: A modern mansion for the new century, it is one of the first homes in America to be wired for electricity with no backup power system, generated by coal from Berwind's own mines. And their servants—with a single exception—have all gone on strike to protest their working conditions. Summarily dismissing and replacing his staff with cool and callous efficiency, Berwind throws a grand party to showcase the marvels of his new "cottage."

Emma and Derrick are invited to the fete, which culminates not only in a fabulous musicale but an unforeseen tragedy—a chambermaid is found dead in the coal tunnel. In short order, it is also discovered that a guest's diamond necklace is missing and a laborer has disappeared.

Detective Jessie Whyte entreats Emma and Derrick to help with the investigation and determine if the murdered maid and stolen necklace are connected. As the dark deeds cast a shadow over the blazing mansion, it's up to Emma to shine a light on the culprit . . .

William Le Queux was a British novelist and prolific writer of mysteries. Indeed, mystery surrounds the author himself as to whether he was a spy or rather just a self-promoter. Regardless of which is true, Le Queux brings us a story of intrigue and espionage that travels across Europe in the true spirit of a good mystery. There are shootings, burglaries, romances, escapes from prisons, and intricate conspiracies that may surprise and leave you scratching your head as you try to solve this "whodunit". In the best tradition of a good mystery however, you may need to wait for the final chapters to discover the truth.
