Sinopsis

In "Folk-lore in Borneo," William Henry Furness delves into the rich tapestry of the indigenous cultures of Borneo, presenting a meticulous ethnographic study that captures the essence of local myths, legends, and traditions. The book is characterized by its descriptive and immersive literary style, blending rigorous observation with narrative storytelling that brings the enchanting folklore of the region to life. Furness contextualizes these folk narratives within the broader scope of anthropological study and colonial discourse, providing a critical lens through which readers can understand the intricate relationship between culture, identity, and environment in Bornean society. William Henry Furness, a prominent American naturalist and ethnographer, drawn by his passion for indigenous cultures and their preservation, undertook extensive fieldwork in Borneo. His scholarly background and keen interest in anthropology led him to document the oral traditions and cultural practices that faced the threat of extinction due to colonial influence and modernization. Furness's personal experiences and respect for the peoples of Borneo shine through in his earnest endeavor to elevate their stories to an academic and societal platform. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in anthropology, folklore, or Southeast Asian studies. Furness's work not only enriches our understanding of Bornean cultural heritage but also encourages readers to reflect on the implications of cultural preservation in a rapidly changing world.

With the last decade's television boom across a multitude of platforms, American audiences are being treated to a cascade of shows that some have trumpeted as a second Golden Age. But something completely new is stirring, too—the Rainbow Age. For the first time in the history of American television, we have shows in which LGBTQIA+ characters have evolved from being an anomaly to being an almost given and celebrated presence on the small screen. But what more can queer TV do? Is each new queer character really breaking ground? And has the curse of the fictional dead lesbian finally been defeated?

The Rainbow Age of Television tackles these questions and more as author Shayna Maci Warner tracks the history and evolution of LGBTQIA+ icons across the televised ages and into the future—from the first televised queer kiss (we think) to the shows that are making household names and heroes of queer characters. Warner uses original interviews with queer TV icons along with detailed history to investigate the constraints under which queer people have been allowed to exist on American television. The Rainbow Age of Television explores why queer people are so invested in—and conflicted by—the kinds of storytelling that TV has to offer. Above all, it's a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ shows, their characters, and their creators that define this new age in television.

The Kushan Empire, one of the most influential powers in Central and South Asia, originated from the nomadic Yuezhi people. The Yuezhi were an Indo-European group that initially resided in the western regions of China, near the Tarim Basin. However, in the 2nd century BCE, they were forced to migrate westward due to conflicts with the Xiongnu, a dominant steppe confederation. This migration led them into Central Asia, where they eventually settled in the Bactrian region, which had previously been under Greek influence following the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
Over time, the Yuezhi tribes consolidated their power, and by the 1st century CE, one of their clans, the Kushans, emerged as the dominant force. Kujula Kadphises, the first major ruler of the Kushan Dynasty, is credited with unifying the fragmented Yuezhi groups and establishing the foundation of the empire. Under his leadership, the Kushans expanded their influence, incorporating regions of modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. His military campaigns against the remnants of the Indo-Greek and Indo-Scythian kingdoms allowed the Kushans to gain control over crucial trade routes, solidifying their position as a major power in the region.
The early political structure of the Kushan Empire reflected its nomadic roots while incorporating elements from the civilizations it encountered. The rulers maintained a centralized authority but allowed local governance to continue in many areas, a practice that helped integrate diverse cultural and ethnic groups into the empire. This pragmatic approach to governance enabled the Kushans to sustain their rule over a vast and multicultural domain.
