Sinopsis

In "Travels in Africa, Egypt, and Syria, from the year 1792 to 1798," William George Browne presents a meticulously detailed account of his extensive journeys across diverse landscapes and cultures. Written in an era marked by burgeoning European interest in Africa and the Middle East, Browne's narrative blends first-hand observation with rich descriptions, embodying the Enlightenment principles of inquiry and rationality. His prose not only captures the geographical and cultural richness of these regions but also reflects the period's complex interactions between Western explorers and Eastern societies, paving the way for future studies in travel literature. Browne, an astute observer with an insatiable curiosity, was deeply influenced by the spirit of exploration that characterized his time. His background in natural philosophy and his experiences as a trader granted him unique insights into the socio-political fabric of the regions he traversed. Browne's work stems from his desire to challenge contemporary stereotypes and promote a deeper understanding of the cultures he encountered, as well as to contribute to the growing body of travel literature that shaped European perceptions of foreign lands. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in 18th-century exploration, colonial narratives, and the intersections of culture and geography. Browne's work serves not only as a historical document but also as a compelling narrative that invites readers to engage with the complexities of the human experience across continents.

HondaBoy is a family story about two seemingly unrelated things, the thrill of riding motorbikes and the survivor guilt from escaping a deadly family illness. The stories, spanning decades, are told through the lenses of travel, music and family. HondaBoy will make you laugh and maybe cry as it touches on the universal urge to keep moving to escape crises, but most of all, HondaBoy is an attempt to come to terms with illness and bereavement through humour.
What a fantastic read! ….humor and heartfelt moments….really captures the carefree, rebellious spirit! This is a story that’s bound to make people laugh, reflect, and feel deeply.

'Fascinating and lyrical . . . A beautifully written celebration of a lifelong passion' – Stephen Venables
The relationship of people with hills and mountains has been complex, rich and varied – from awe and wonder to fear and loathing, from spiritual longing to peaceful acceptance.
As he explores our high places, Ian Crofton conjures up those who have been there before: Neolithic axe-makers, mass trespassers, shepherds, quarrymen, botanists, poets and pioneering cragsmen and women among them. At the same time, he is ever attuned to the present moment – a flash of bright moss in a bog, the swoop of an eagle above a skyline, a winter sun sinking into a sea of cloud.
Following an arc from the gentle Downs of southern England to the wild peaks of Scotland's far north, Upland combines personal experiences with a keen curiosity about the history and nature of mountain landscapes, and the people who once worked and wandered among them. The result is a meditation on the enduring yet ever-changing hills, on the transience of human experience, and on the shifts and twists of time itself.

The classical era of Japan was defined by a rich interplay of art, power, and evolving traditions, spanning the Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods. The Nara Period saw the establishment of Japan’s first permanent capital, heavily influenced by Chinese culture, with Buddhism gaining prominence and shaping religious and artistic developments.
The Heian Period marked the height of imperial court culture, where poetry, literature, and refined aesthetics flourished under the rule of aristocratic families like the Fujiwara. It was also during this time that the kana writing system emerged, giving rise to literary masterpieces such as The Tale of Genji. As courtly elegance gave way to the rise of the samurai, the Kamakura Shogunate ushered in a new era of warrior rule, led by the Minamoto clan.
The establishment of a military government transformed Japan’s political landscape, laying the groundwork for feudal society while facing external threats like the Mongol invasions. These three periods together shaped Japan’s cultural and political identity, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to influence the nation today.

The mythology of the Incas is a fascinating tapestry of gods, legends, and rituals that shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of one of the most powerful civilizations in the Americas. Unlike written traditions found in other ancient cultures, Incan mythology was passed down orally, with each generation preserving and refining the stories that explained the origins of the world, the forces of nature, and the role of human beings in the cosmos. These myths were deeply intertwined with the daily lives of the Inca people, influencing everything from their agricultural practices to their political structures.

At the heart of Incan mythology was a complex belief system that divided the universe into three realms: Hanan Pacha, the upper world of the gods; Kay Pacha, the earthly realm of humans; and Uku Pacha, the underworld where spirits and ancestors resided. These realms were connected by sacred mountains, rivers, and celestial bodies, all of which were considered divine. The gods of the Incan pantheon, led by Viracocha, the supreme creator, played a central role in shaping the world and maintaining balance within these realms. Inti, the sun god, was revered as the divine ancestor of the ruling class, while Pachamama, the earth goddess, was honored for providing sustenance and fertility.

Rituals and ceremonies were essential to maintaining harmony between the natural and supernatural worlds. The Inca performed elaborate festivals, such as Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, to honor their deities and ensure the continuation of prosperity. Priests and oracles played a crucial role in interpreting the will of the gods, often conducting sacrifices—both animal and human—as acts of devotion and appeasement. Sacred sites, including Coricancha in Cusco and Machu Picchu, served as centers of worship where offerings were made to the gods.

The best new writing, photography, art, and reportage from and about California—in the “rich and engrossing” series for travelers and armchair travelers (Times Literary Supplement).

From the Gold Rush to Hollywood’s golden age to the rise of Silicon Valley, California has long stood as the brightest symbol of the American dream. In recent years, however, the country’s mainstream media has been declaring with increasing frequency—and thinly veiled schadenfreude—the “end of California as we know it.”

The pessimists point to rising inequality, racial tensions, and the impact of climate change as evidence that the Californian dream has been shattered. Between extreme heat, months-long droughts, devastating wildfires, and rising sea levels, looking at California is like watching the trailer for what awaits the world if we don’t act to reduce global warming. Faced with these pressures, more and more Californians are leaving the state, leading to an unprecedented decline in population that could change the cultural and political balance of power in the country at large.

That said, demographic decline and climate disasters don’t tell the whole story of one of the most dynamic and diverse states in the Union—one that continues to drive technological and political innovation and define the evolution of work, food, entertainment, and social relations. This volume offers a fascinating picture of California in all its complexity and contradictions—an attempt to understand the laboratory where much of the world’s future continues to be written—with pieces including:

Growing Uncertainty in the Central Valley by Anna Wiener • How Does It Feel to Be a Solution? by Vanessa Hua • The Burning of Paradise by Mark Arax • Plus: direct democracy and unsustainable development, the rise of the “land back” movement, the cultural renaissance of Los Angeles in defiance of rampant gentrification, and much more . . .

“The Passenger readers will find none of the typical travel guide sections on where to eat or what sights to see. Consider the books, rather, more like a literary vacation.” —Publishers Weekly
