Sinopsis

In "Poems by William Cullen Bryant," the American poet weaves a rich tapestry of nature, mortality, and the human experience, encapsulating the romantic ideals of the early 19th century. Bryant's literary style is characterized by a harmonious blend of descriptive imagery and philosophical reflection, often drawing on themes inspired by the American landscape. The collection boasts an array of poems that illustrate the sublime beauty of nature while contemplating the deeper existential questions of life and death, thus establishing Bryant as a vanguard of American Romanticism, evident in his signature piece, "Thanatopsis." William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was not only a poet but a journalist and editor deeply engaged with the cultural and political currents of his time. His early exposure to the pastoral settings of Massachusetts profoundly influenced his appreciation for the natural world, which is a recurring subject in his poetry. Moreover, as an advocate for social justice and environmental conservation, Bryant's writings reflect his commitment to the moral and ethical undertones of the American experience, positioning him as a pivotal figure in antebellum literature. I recommend "Poems by William Cullen Bryant" to those who seek a deeper understanding of the intertwining relationships between nature and humanity. This anthology is not merely a collection of verses but a philosophical exploration that continues to resonate with readers today, offering insight into the timeless questions that define our existence.

All of Nichol's work is stamped by his desire to create texts that are engaging in themselves as well as in context, and to use indirect structural and textual devices to carry meaning. In The Martyrology different ways of speaking testify to a journey through different ways of being. Language is both the poet's instructor and, through its various permutations, the dominant 'image' of the poem. The [nine] books of The Martyrology document a poet's quest for insight into himself andhis writing through scrupulous attention to the messages hidden in the morphology of his own speech.' - Frank Davey

Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828–29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself.Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years.

Life is frenetic. Everything is running faster which usually means we are running later. Everything should have been done 5 minutes ago or better still yesterday. We are slowly falling behind, overwhelmed by busy lives in an ever-exacting world.

In these more modern times, time is everything. There’s never enough of it.

So how do we slow down and become more comfortable with our lives, how do we find a balance? Life shouldn’t just be one task after another. Yes, a good life has to be worked for, found time for, but life should also be enjoyed and savoured.

One answer may lie in the past. Classic poets down the decades and centuries have wisely observed that there are many things, both great and small, that bring a sense of stillness, an aura of calm, a chance to re-engage with our feelings and emotions purely by taking time for moments that matter.

With verse and poems from the likes of William Shakespeare, Alexander Pope, Mirabai, Tagore, Rumi and the calming balms of many others that soothe the soul and bring the inner peace we all need.
