Sinopse

'Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom' is an anthology that not only explores the harrowing experiences associated with the quest for freedom but also exhibits a rich tapestry of literary styles that articulate the profound emotional and psychological dimensions of escape from slavery. The anthology is striking for its narrative power and historical significance, weaving together first-person narratives that provide a visceral insight into the bravery and desperation of slaves in antebellum America. The collection stands out for its vivid re-telling of personal journeys, marked by the perilous routes and heartbreaking sacrifices made in the pursuit of liberation, framing a significant portion of American historical narrative through deeply personal lenses. The editors, William and Ellen Craft, themselves escaped slaves, bring a poignant authenticity and authoritative voice to the anthology. Their own legendary escape, cleverly documented within these pages, epitomizes the quest for freedom that defines this collection. Their backgrounds, inherently intertwined with the abolitionist movements and the broader struggle for civil rights, imbue the anthology with a resonance that transcends mere historical documentation, reflecting a lived experience of the relentless fight against subjugation and the complex quest for identity and freedom within an oppressive society. This anthology is an essential read for anyone interested in the real, raw narratives of escape from slavery. It offers a unique compilation of stories that are as educational as they are emotionally stirring. By delivering a multitude of perspectives on the will to freedom, paired with critical introspections of personal and collective identities challenged and reshaped through extreme adversity, this book not only enriches the reader's understanding of a pivotal era in American history but also invites an ongoing dialogue about freedom, resistance, and human rights.

"Running the World is a captivating tale of inspiration and adventure! It made me feel like if Robyn can do it—maybe I can too!" - Author of Foam, Laurel SenickWhat does it take to run the world—literally and figuratively?
For Robyn Godfrey, it meant logging thousands of miles and navigating one of the most transformative decades of her life. Running the World is more than a runner’s travelogue, it’s a memoir of reinvention, resilience, and the conviction that it’s never too late to redefine yourself.
Robyn’s story begins not on a start line but in adolescence, as a clumsy, reluctant teen, and later as a mid-life party girl questioning her relationship with alcohol. She wasn’t chasing medals, she was searching for purpose in a life full of contradictions.
Everything changed the day she laced up a pair of running shoes. What began as a fitness experiment became a calling. With each step, Robyn discovered a stronger, braver self, one who embraced discomfort and learned to trust her instincts.
She then set an audacious goal: conquer all six World Marathon Majors. Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City. That quest demanded more than 26.2 miles of training; it required navigating foreign cities, jet lag, cultural surprises, self-doubt, and the emotional weight of life at home.
Yet she persevered, running through rain, heat, and snow; training before dawn and after work; crossing finish lines with gratitude and grit. Each city left its mark: cheering crowds in London, carb-loading lessons in Tokyo, Heartbreak Hill’s triumph in Boston, Berlin’s fierce determination, Chicago’s home-field spirit, and New York’s electrifying finale...

The incredible wartime saga of the only American submariners
to survive the sinking of their ship and evade enemy capture in WWII

On the night of August 13, 1944, the U.S. submarine Flier struck a mine in the Sulu Sea in the southern Philippines as it steamed along the surface. All but fifteen of the more than eighty-strong crew went down with the vessel. Of those left floating in the dark, eight survived by swimming for seventeen hours before washing ashore on an uninhabited island. The story of the Flier and its eight survivors is wholly unique in the annals of U.S. military history.

Eight Survived tells the gripping story of the doomed submarine and its crew from its first patrol, during which it sank several enemy ships, to the explosion in the Sulu Sea. Drawing on interviews with the survivors and on a visit to the jungle where they washed ashore—where a cast of fascinating characters helped the U.S. sailors evade the Japanese—Douglas Campbell fully captures the combination of extraordinary courage and luck that marked one of the most heroic episodes of World War II.

Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin was born on 14th February 1855 in what is now Dnipro in the Ukraine, but then part of the Russian Empire.
After attending secondary school he studied at the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute.
Wars between and on behalf of Empires were a regular feature of the decades then. Garshin volunteered to serve in the Russian army at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
He began as a private in the Balkans campaign and was wounded in action. By the end of the war, in 1878, he had been promoted to officer rank.
By now Garshin, having previously published some articles and reviews in newspapers, wished to devote himself to a literary career. The decision made he resigned his army commission.
His time as a soldier provided rich experiences for his early stories. His first ‘Four Days’ was related as the interior monologue of a wounded soldier left for dead on the battlefield for four days, face to face with the corpse of a Turkish soldier he had killed, gained him early admiration as an author of note.
He wrote perhaps only 20 stories, but their influence was immense, although in these more modern times he is barely remembered and lives in the more prolific shadows of others. His characters are superbly worked into stories that come alive in the intensity and reality of his prose.
Garshin’s most well-known story is ‘The Red Flower’, also known as ‘Scarlet Blossom’ and is easily amongst the first rank of stories dealing with mental health issues.
Despite early literary success, he himself experienced periodical bouts of mental illness.
In one such bout Garshin attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself down the stone stairs leading into his apartment building. Although not immediately fatal, Vsevolod Garshin died as a result of his injuries in a St Petersburg hospital on 5th April 1888. He was 33.

A remarkable story of integrity, skill and survival in a world divided by war The most famous German fighter pilot of World War II, Adolf Galland was respected by both comrades and former enemies alike. A highly decorated 'ace' with over 100 air-to-air victories in the West, he was a recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, which was awarded to only 27 men among the millions who served. After the war, he built friendships with the very Allied pilots he once fought and was admired as much for his integrity as for his prowess as a pilot and commander. In his final years, he worked closely with historian David Baker to produce this authorised biography, largely illustrated with photographs from his private albums. Offering a rare glimpse into both the air battles of World War II and the inner workings of the Luftwaffe, and now featuring new appendices that include the latest research into Galland's aerial kills, this book stands as an essential record of one of history's most remarkable fighter pilots.

The aftermath of the 2003 Iraq invasion is a story that has yet to be told by those who fought their own war against a brutal insurgency: the private security contractors. Risking life and limb, often side by side with the US military but far more exposed, they were never to receive a hero's homecoming. They remained in the shadows, often with good cause, but that would change for ever on 31 March 2004, when a security convoy was ambushed in Fallujah and the charred bodies of two American operators were strung from a road bridge. Those events would ensure notoriety for the company involved: Blackwater.
This is the untold story of the security industry and its private war, recounted by a man who witnessed it first hand: SAS veteran and New Zealand national Barrie Rice. His visceral, no-holds-barred account of his time with Blackwater is brought to life in scenes that lead to a reckoning with both the war and himself. This gripping account delivers a compelling slice of reality – the inside story of the private contractor's war.
