Sinopsis

In "A Sketch of the Life of the Late Henry Cooper," William Cooper crafts a poignant biographical narrative that delves into the life and legacy of his brother, Henry Cooper. The text is marked by a fluid prose style that seamlessly weaves anecdotes and historical context, creating a rich tapestry of personal and social significance. Set against the backdrop of the 19th century, Cooper's work not only illuminates family ties but also critiques the broader societal transformations occurring during the period, inviting readers to reflect on themes of ambition, loss, and memory. William Cooper, a prominent figure of his time, was deeply influenced by his familial relationships and the sociopolitical dynamics of 19th-century England. His intimate portrayal of Henry is a testament to both his literary skill and his personal attachment, revealing insights into the often-overlooked struggles and triumphs that defined not just an individual life, but the collective experience of many during that transformative era. Cooper's own experiences as a writer and observer of society shape his empathetic reflection on his brother's journey. Cooper's evocative style and earnest storytelling elevate this work beyond mere biography, making it a significant contribution to both literary and historical discourse.

In addition to this high-powered, high-pressured role, Liz faced her own breast cancer diagnosis, severe depression and suicidal thoughts, in tandem with commonplace sexual harassment and bullying. Though history is usually written by the victors, the lack of a particularly strong writing tradition from the Mongols ensured that history was largely written by those who they vanquished. Because of this, their portrayal in the West and the Middle East has been extraordinarily (and in many ways unfairly) negative for centuries, at least until recent revisions to the historical record. The Mongols have long been depicted as wild horse-archers galloping out of the dawn to rape, pillage, murder and enslave, but the Mongol army was a highly sophisticated, minutely organized and incredibly adaptive and innovative institution, as witnessed by the fact that it was successful in conquering enemies who employed completely different weaponry and different styles of fighting, from Chinese armored infantry to Middle Eastern camel cavalry and Western knights and men-at-arms. Likewise, the infrastructure and administrative corps which governed the empire, though largely borrowed from the Chinese, was inventive, practical, and extraordinarily modern and efficient. This was no fly-by-night enterprise but a sophisticated, complex, and extremely well-oiled machine.
Aside from Genghis and his grandson Kublai Khan, the most famous Mongol conqueror was Tamerlane, who dominated Eurasia in the 14th century. He was known by the name Timur in Asia, while the Europeans used the name Tamerlane, which came from the Persian Timur-i-Leng, meaning “Timur the Lame.” This was intended to be an insult referring to crippling injuries he received to his right leg and arm as a young man, probably from arrows, but clearly his injuries did not prevent him from spending much of his lifetime in the saddle. Tamerlane came from a Turkicized Mongol tribe, the Barlas, which had several constituent sub-clans. A number of original Mongol tribes had migrated west, where the majority of the population was Turkish, and over time, the Mongols blended with the Turks.

'A lovely writer: supple, stylish and almost effortlessly witty.' Daily Mail
'Made me laugh out loud and then properly cry.’ Jennie Godfrey
When it comes to the challenge of being a man, Adam Farrer always seems to find a way to fall short…
Broken Biscuits vividly recounts Adam’s struggles to live up to masculine expectations, real or imagined. From the calamity of his first serious relationship to an obsession with Prince that sees everyone questioning his sexuality, and from the repercussions of his adult circumcision to his doubts about his ability to survive the apocalypse, this candid and personal collection of essays is astonishingly far-reaching and riotously funny.
Holding up a mirror to Adam’s own body image, his relationship with his family, his sense of self-worth and the mortifying experience of arriving at a teenage party wearing strawberry-patterned short shorts, this book is about growing up and trying to define yourself as a man but somehow always missing the mark.
In this humorous autobiography, Adam Farrer presents a social study of his own life, filled with memoirs of his struggles with gender expectations. Broken Biscuits is a top pick for those seeking a candid, non-fiction exploration of masculinity.
