Sinopsis

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Willa Cather, an analysis of the literature of a free and empowered woman

First published in 1926, “My Mortal Enemy” is the eighth novel by American author Willa Cather. Cather sketches a character study of a woman and a life not particularly well-lived. In this slim work, the story of an ill-considered marriage unfolds.

In “My Mortal Enemy,” Cather’s narrating alter ego, this time a young woman called Nellie, remembers a woman she first encountered as a teenager, Myra Henshawe. As a young woman, Myra gave up a fortune to marry for love—a boldly romantic gesture that became a legend in her family. But this worldly, sarcastic, and perhaps even wicked woman may have been made for something greater than love.
In her portrait of Myra and in her exquisitely nuanced depiction of her marriage, Cather shows the evolution of a human spirit as it comes to bridle against the constraints of ordinary happiness and seek an otherworldly fulfillment. “My Mortal Enemy” is a work whose drama and intensely moral imagination make it unforgettable.

The general began his honored army career by leading his fellow cadets at West Point and ultimately commanded all U. S. forces in Asia. In the turbulent centuries of empire, the Caribbean was not merely a battlefield of nations, it was the beating heart of a global underground. Pirates of Empire reveals how smugglers, privateers, and rogue traders built an illicit economy that reshaped the Atlantic world, fueling fortunes, revolutions, and the birth of modern capitalism itself.
From Havana to Port Royal, from Bristol’s counting houses to the hidden coves of Hispaniola, Davis Truman uncovers the shadow networks that thrived beneath imperial rule. These were the real architects of the empire’s wealth, men and women who blurred the line between outlaw and entrepreneur, freedom and servitude, conquest and survival. Their ships carried more than plunder: they carried people, ideas, and commodities that transformed continents.
With gripping storytelling and cutting-edge scholarship, Pirates of Empire reframes piracy not as rebellion against empire, but as its indispensable partner. It exposes how colonial powers quietly relied on black markets to sustain their ambitions, and how these hidden economies gave rise to the modern Caribbean, multicultural, volatile, and endlessly creative.
Blending adventure and analysis, Pirates of Empire invites readers to sail into the murky waters where legality and legitimacy collided, and where the foundations of the modern world were forged in contraband and courage.

Finding Love and Intimacy in the most unlikely place.
2022 Gold Medal Winner Reader's Favorite
New York City. The late 1980s.
On the eve of her graduation from The Juilliard Drama School, Sephe Haven is broke, hopeful, and certain of two things: that she’s destined for a lifelong acting career, and that somewhere in the world, love is waiting for her.
Then in one unforeseen moment, every open door slams shut.
With no money and years of college debt looming, Sephe makes a choice she swears will last only a week. Maybe two. Tops. She starts to work as an escort—just long enough to pay the bills, buy herself time, and get out before it’s too late.
But the deeper she ventures into this forbidden world, the more she discovers that the very qualities about her the “real world” dismissed are precisely the ones most valued here. And leaving becomes far more complicated than entering.
Written with irresistible wit, refreshing candor, and remarkable compassion, My Whorizontal Life: An Escort’s Tale is far more than a memoir about the escort industry. It is a heartwarming, profoundly moving story about chasing dreams, daring to hold fast to meaning, and discovering that love is not just a feeling but a verb, sometimes found in the unlikeliest of places.

A transparent first-hand account of a Black officer maneuvering through three terrifying yet rewarding decades of policing, all while seeking reform in law enforcement

When 16-year-old Keith Merith finds himself pulled over, berated, and degraded by a white police officer, he’s outraged. He’s done nothing wrong. But the officer has the power, and he doesn’t. From that day on, he vows to join a police service and effect change from within.

Twelve years and a multitude of infuriating applications later, Merith is finally hired by York Regional Police. Subjected to unfair treatment and constant microaggressions, he perseveres and gradually rises through the ranks, his goal of systemic change carrying him through. After a stellar career, Merith retires at the rank of superintendent, but his desire for sustained and equitable reform is stronger than ever.

In A Darker Shade of Blue, Merith shares both his gut-wrenching and heart-warming experiences and advocates for immediate police reform in a balanced and level-headed manner. He praises the people in blue, but he also knows on a visceral level that there are deep issues that need to be rectified — starting with recruitment. He knows that law enforcement agencies should reflect the communities they serve and protect, and that all citizens should be treated equally. Entrusted with the duty to serve, Merith delivers an evocative perspective of policing by providing the opportunity to walk in his shoes, as a Black man, and as a police officer on the front lines.
